So I got stung by a wasp, I think?

Dog got stung by a wasp on the nose?

  • Earlier in the morning my dog got stung by a wasp. I'm not really sure I know the full story since I was still asleep at 7 in the morning. However my mother told me that my dog just went outside to play and do her thiing. She was minding her own business and smelling the grass than suddenly I think that's when she got stung on the nose by the wasp. I'm sure its a wasp. We've had them before and got rid of them. Unfortunately their back :( What I was told was my dog just shook her head continuously, pawed at her nose and ran to my mother. Then she came inside and had some water. I've been checking out where she got stung. Its a bit obvious where. However I can't find the stinger. I've tried making a pastey baking soda and putting it on her nose. She just licked it off. Should I try icing it? It honestly doesn't seem like its bothering her that much. What should I do? I have to leave for work in about two hours.

  • Answer:

You won't find a stinger, because bees leave behind the stinger, not wasps. If its not bothering her right now, it probably won't do much of anything. I had a cat get stung by a wasp and she wigged out for a while, licking it and shaking it, but within an hour or two she was perfectly fine. Most animals have inherent defenses against that kinda thing, some do not. Just keep an eye on her til you go to work, and if she's fine, no big deal, if not, see if you can go to work a couple hours late and take her to the vet. Or if someone else can take her. Stop putting stuff on it though, you'll only make it worse.

Because no-one may be at home soon, give your dog the correct dose of Benadryl. http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/diphenhydramine-benadryl/page1.aspx If you have the slightest indication that your dog is going into a shock reaction, then call the vet.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG ANY DRUGS< EVER< WITHOUT THE DIRECTION OF YOUR VET. Get her to the vet IMMEDIATELY - and ask them to keep her for the day, for observation. Insect stings like this can cause facial swelling that extends into the upper respiratory system - I have seen a German Shepherd turn into what looked like a Shar Pei after a wasp sting, and have trouble breathing. It was really alarming, and definitely an emergency. DON'T put any more baking soda on it - it's a lot of salt, and it will also froth in her stomach. You don't want to cause bloat, and you don't want to overload her system with salt. Let the vet know she had some as well. You have time to get her to care now - make arrangements for that. The last thing you want is for your dog to go into respiratory distress while you're not home. It's a legitimate concern.
