Why do some men appear to project their masculinity on to their dogs?

  • Just answered a question about HRT in dogs, and it made me think about men who have big dogs, intact to make themselves appear bigger. *ahem* Red sports cars, big dogs, blondes... what is this phenomenon? I over heard two boys in my class room the other day discussing how they 'hated' cats too. 'The only good cat is a dead cat', they said. What is it with SOME men and their FEAR of all things small and fluffy, or of projecting the castration of a dog onto themselves? I think a man who can show his softer side, pet a cat, or have a small dog and love it is much more masculine than all the cowards who stomp about...isn't the world strange?

    insecurity and other self-worth issues A lot of guys I've known over the years who had Pit-Bulls, Wolves, Dobermans, mastiffs and the likes were really lacking in their opinions of themselves . . it seemed that most were overcompensating . . and with few exceptions . . .they had difficulty with the opposite sex or had strange relationships . . in general. Now, that is not to say, everyone is this way . . but there is a higher propensity for these people to overcompensate in all arenas . . including their pets. I have had, for the most part . . terriers and chihuahuas and cats . . . animals that didn't require vast amounts of food, cleanup, and were people friendly. I have owned a couple of german shepherds over the years . . amazing dogs! Yeah, guys will be guys . . there's that machismo thing going on . . but we're not all sprung like the wierdows that require animals that terrify the public.

The men don't 'project' their masculinity onto the dogs. They get the dogs to BE their masculinity for them, because they have serious confidence, self esteem, self worth, and plain masculinity issues. These gangster thugs get those dogs to be their manhood. It's ridiculous really.

I don't know why someone has to have a big dog. I know one biker dude (this guy was a BEAST - his arms were as big as trees!) every morning I'd see him taking his little Yorkie out to potty. Probably didn't weigh more than 2 lbs. You could see it in his eyes, he loved that little dog to bits. :)

Luckily I have a man who's confident enough with himself to walk my Chihuahua, Pekingese/Chihuahua, and Cairn terrier without feeling fruity. He'll even use the pink leash. Some guys are just insecure ninnies. He even cuddles up on the couch with the cats!

It has always been this way. Little boys always kill small animals. When I was a kid (I'm old now) they killed lizards, horny toads, frogs, birds, pulled the legs off grass hoppers, one wing off a butterfly, setting animals on fire. & every body says, 'boys will be boys'. I think that these guys are TRYING to make up for their own inadequacies. They them selves don't have it but a big car improves the image, so does a big bad dog. Just pity the men like this. Feel sorry for them. They are just little men with a big ego. Be careful though, that ego is fragile. You can pop it with a pin. Poor guys, huh?

Well, as far as the only good cat is a dead cat thing, I'm a girl and I believe that as well. Though I would never hurt or kill a cat myself. As far as the rest, I think it's partly because of the culture we live in. How many movies show the cool guy or the tough guy as someone who keeps fluffy kittens, or drives in an eco friendly car, or whose dog is neutered? The only time it seems to happen is when it's meant to have the person or situation seem less serious, as in an attack dog being a poodle or something of the like. Really, you see something similar with girls. Except they go for the tiny dogs who can fit in their purses, and for football jocks or guys who are handsome despite the fact that they might abuse them or have no interest in ever getting a meaningful career.

Well my husband walked around with a big dog, who wasn't neutered until he was older....because it was MY dog. In my household, thanks in part to his mother's influence, my husband leans towards smaller,fluffy dogs. Meanwhile, I am not in anyway a small fuffy dog person-mastiffs,ABPT,staffies,rotties & bulldog types appeal to me. I like red "sports" cars. I am determined to get a red 68 COPO Camaro. Sure some men use their dog as an extension of their manhood.Just like SOME women dress up a small fluffy,dog in a coordinating outfit & stuff them in a matching designer dog purse as an extension of their femininity.
