How does your dog food rate?

  • I thought this was interesting! what number is your food? Start with a grade of 100: 1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points 2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points 4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer’s rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2

    Ok, that's too much math for me right now. I was doing good up until #4...then i lost count and got frustrated. I feed Canidae and I hope it's an ok food. Edit: I got a thumbs down because I suck at math?? LOL..that's priceless!!

I can't get to the bag right now, it's so huge, but if I did my score would be like, negative 1000 or something. Sadly we feed store brand because it's all we can afford. I'll keep this for future reference when I get my own dog so I can feed him/her some nice food though.

i feed mine a raw diet so i guess it's the best.

Sorry, I don't have a bag nearby, but I plan to do this at another time. I feed my dog Fromm Four-star. His favorites are Chicken a la veggies, and Whitefish and Potato. I sometimes also mix in yogurt, egg yolk, and some canned Evanger's food (the canned Evanger's food would actually be edible for me, and I have tried it!).

You dont' want to feed multiple meat sources. One single source of animal protein helps prevent allergies and intestinal problems. This test doesn't rate dog food accurately.

I feed a mixture of Wellness Super Mix 5,Canidae Platinum,Eagle Pack Holisitic Blend Senior, Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice,Chicken Soup Senior,and today I bought a bag of "Taste of the Wild" with Bison and Venison to add to it. I know that they are all pretty well-rated,but my brain is too hot to do the math right now!! It is sweltering!!! None of them have corn,though. =D

My little buddy eats a mix of Canidae All Life Stages and Wellness Just for puppy so I say he's got the best or almost the best.

Taste of the Wild, Wetlands formula scores 100. The test was pretty easy for me since it is grainless. Here is another link with additional grading criteria for comparing premium foods.
