How did you hear about the breed of your choice?

A fun question, after all the stupidity around here. How did you first hear about the breed of your choice? With my preferred breed (Coton de Tulear)....hm, I don't really remember, actually. I think it was one of those online dog breed quizzes I went on. The other two breeds I like are Rough Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs. Guess where the Rough Collie came from? Lassie! LOL. The Shetland Sheepdog came from my 4rth grade teacher, she had two and I thought they were perfect for my lifestyle..."Like Rough Collies in the miniature! Perfect for my life!" I remember thinking.... So....what about you guys? Legit- If you were to create any dog breed for absolutely any purpose, what would it be for, and what would you call it? And what do you imagine it would look like? I'd make a breed that can speak human and animal languages. We'd be able to know what's on everything's mind! It'd be called...Oregon Speaker Dog. Acceptable breed colors would be gray, black, white, and a dark, muddyish brown. Spots of different colors would be acceptable, but only up to 3 colors. Also...have you ever read to your dog? Did he appear to listen? All answers except for stupid ones and ones advertising your own questions are welcome.

Answer:
I don't know where I first heard about Border Collies. My Grandfather, probabilly. He owned a farm and always worked his collies to herd the sheep, and constantly said they were the smartest dogs in the world. That, I can't desagree with! I always remember my cousins BC, a gorgeous merle with blue eyes who could dive to the river and emerge stones so huge they got stuck in the jaws. All his friends were jealous of him. I was very small and I really wanted one. As I grew up, owned and cared for more and more dogs (mainly mutts from the rescue center) I decided I wanted a dog to work with in Agility and Obedience. The BC was the greatest dog I could find. I've owned three hard-working, loveable, inteligent, beautiful dogs and I don't regret anything! As for the Old English Sheepdog... I don't know. Actually, I think my father's friend was a reputable breeder of these. I loved the Beatles, and probabilly was fascinated by Paul and Linda's Mccartney lovely "Martha", jumping around in the "Something" music video... Legit: Well... Actually... I don't think I can answer this questions. I've just dissed a freakin' BYB, I don't want to turn into one - you're question isn't BYB-like, mind you - but this creation of new breeds isn't really my style. Sorry! Yes, I read to my dogs my homework every night. I know, I'm crazy - they don't seem to be fully interested (I wonder why).

I literally ended up with dogs, that needed to be rescued, regardless of their breed I have a shepherd mix, rescued as a pup from the shelter, an Aussie mix rescued, a pit bull mix, rescued off the streets, and a chihuahua adopted from my grandmother who couldn't care for him any longer. Sometimes, life throws things at you, for a reason Legit- I wouldnt. Theres already a breed out there, that fits all of my likings, the APBT one of the best companions, loyal, need to please their owner, smart, great watchdog. They have the whole package. , i wouldnt change anything, except the ignorance that surrounds this breed, which is far from reality..
Dont Litter! Spay and Neuter
I went to a dog park a few years ago.. and saw the most beautiful Bloodhound (the first one I have EVER seen) She was a black and tan, and was just so stunning.. obedient, she walked very proud.. even when she was drooling over a frisbee.. lol. LEGIT: I would like.. as you do.. a dog that could speak both human and animal language. I would like it to look exactly like a Bloodhound, but with really long wavy/water resistant hair (fur like a wirehaird pointer) Acceptable colours would be liver and tan, black and tan, liver and reds, and reds. I cant said I have ever tried reading to them.. but I sing to my dogs.. I play acoustic music with my boyfriend very often, and it puts them to sleep. Kind of like babies.. lol. GOOD QUESTION!
Bloodhounds All The Way!
The FIRST time I had heard about them.. I was raising a Standard Poodle for Pilot Dogs thru 4-H. I took him to a 4-H obedience class, mostly for the socialization. The trainer was a woman with a Gordon Setter. She talked about some of the dogs she had seen at dog shows, and mentioned the oddest she had ever seen was a Chinese Crested, which she described as a hairless dog with hair on its feet, head and tail. I just couldnt quite picture what that looked like, but didnt think anything more of it. Years later.. I was looking to get a small dog. I really did not know exactly what breed I wanted, but I knew what qualities I wanted out of a dog. I was asking around on various forums. Some BYB had contacted me, wanting to sell me a powederpuff crested. I did not buy from her, but it did spark my interest in the breed. Legit I cant think of any breed I'd create. We have over 400 recognized breeds.. many of them are quite versatile and can perform many tasks/functions. Never read to Fred, no.. but I do talk to him. He will crawl up on the arm of the chair when I read to my baby.

When I was growing up, we always had Beagles or some kind of hound. A relative gave us a German Shepherd when my brother was about 5 or so. She was a little bit of a thing, nothing special to look at, but was sweet, loving, and totally devoted to keeping an eye on that boy. After that, we were never without one. Once I was settled and had my own little boys, there was no question in my mind what breed I wanted. I think, for me, they are the perfect breed. Legit- I'd like to create a GSD that could speak. They understand so much and look like they'd really like to answer you. They try... My male works as a reading partner for schoolchildren that need help reading. With his erect ears and the way he looks at them, they really think he understands what they are reading to him. They don't have to feel embarrassed if they make a mistake. What a great way to encourage kids to read!

On a TV show here in Australia, Burke's Backyard, about 13 years ago. They had a segment each week called something like Pet Roadtest where they would have some information about certain breeds of animals as pets. The main ones were horses, cats and dogs. I saw a roadtest about Dalmatians and absolutely fell in love. It wasn't until I could get a dog of my own that I researched them more and found that they suited me perfectly. Legit - A dog that could speak would be awesome. No I have never read to my dogs.

I usually choose to adopt a mutt that will be either shot, euthanized, or drowned without my intervention, but my favorite purebred dog is the Akita or pretty much any spitz-type dog. I stumbled across them on the internet awhile back, and I've thought they were so pretty ever since. I saw some show about Akitas on Animal Planet, and I love the stories of their loyalty, and I have a heart for the "breeds that will raise your insurance", such as akitas in America. If I were to create a dog breed, I would want a dog to be very much like a dog, but be able to read emotions very well and know how to act on it. Like if someone has bad intentions for me or my family, I would want my dog to sense it and scare the dude off. I would want my dog to look exactly like an akita or eurasier. Hm, I have never read to my dogs, but I do talk to them, like have actual one sided conversations with them. Molly completely ignores me, but Teddy will stare at me and cock his head like he wishes he could understand what I'm saying.

With Border Collies, we just ended up with one one day. Years ago, my mother's friend's father owned a farm on which he had working dogs. When he had a stroke, he was unable to care for the farm anymore and ended up selling/giving away his animals. Having just moved into our home and thinking we needed a new pet to "complete the family";my mother offered to take in one of his dogs. This dog being a 6 year old female border collie named AJ. She was one of the greatest dogs we have ever owned, so years later I have reconnected with the breed. Legit?: I'm not sure really. I'm pretty stuck with the border collie. Comes in nearly all colours and patterns, perfect size, very versatile. As for reading, I do sometimes when I am practising speaking/speeches which is not often. My border collie does appear to listen at times, but likely only because I say words that peak his interest.

I first fell in love with Great Danes when a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in a while came waltzing in with this GIGANTIC horse of a dog by his side. I've had a soft spot ever since. I notice them every where now. TV, Magazines, musc vidoes, movies.. I also notice when they don't show the Great Dane segment on the AKC Dog Shows in the working group. I get upset because thats what I sit there and wait for them to show! So now I just go and observe all the beautiful Danes at my Club's events and any local shows. I just love them.... lol. I actually have read to my dogs. I sing to them too. And no, I dont think they listen. But they do watch TV which I find interesting... especially animal planet. I wonder if it would make my dog smarter if I read to them? lol. like they say for kids who watch too much tv.

My breed is the poodle. At first, I hated poodles, haha. I thought they were snappy, girly and I hated those haircuts. But, when I wanted a dog, I had to get a 'hypo-allergenic' dog (I know they really aren't..) and after researching different dogs, they just fit my criteria. I ended up getting a beagle/poodle mix from a BYB. Yes, yes, I know, I have learned so much since then. I loved beagles but couldn't get one because of the shedding. So a poodle mix seemed perfect. But since then, I have fallen in love with poodles. I don't think I will ever be without one (: Legit: I would make a dog that is long and saggy, like a basset, but with long legs, with scruffy, long, coarse hair. It would be white with chocolate brown spots. I'd call it Hampton Scruff Retriever. It would be known for it's gentle nature and it's howl/bay and it's retrieving abilities. I have read to my dog, because I was bored, and he just looked at me and looked away :/
