What to take/pack for camping?

GOING CAMPING.... DOG FOOD QUESTION? THANKS!!!?

  • I am going camping on July 23. Today is May 31. I'll be taking Tiger, my dog, with me. We are going for 5 days. He has gone camping with us before, no problems. Here's the problem, though- I raw feed Tiger. I will not be able to raw feed while we are going camping. It's just not possible. 5 days, with no refrigeration? I want to raw feed while camping but unfortunately it's impossible. I am going to have to feed kibble. I am going to be feeding Taste Of The Wild dry food. Now, my question: How long before we go camping should I change to kibble? Like, should I start feeding him kibble 2 weeks before we leave to go camping? Also, which Taste Of The Wild formula should I use? The only one I have used so far is the Bison one... should I just stick with that one? THANKS SO MUCH GUYS!

  • Answer:

The earlier to you make the transition, the less of a chance there'll be that it will upset his stomach. I don't think it matters which formula you pick, but if you feel that your dog liked the bison one, then I'd probably stick with that. Anyway, that sounds like a ton of fun. I wish I could go camping with my dogs. :(

prairie makes freeze dried raw patties that you could take with you. they require no refrigeration and are a complete and balanced raw diet.

Stick with the one that you have used and change the food gradually over a 2 week period. That is going to be a big change for him you might want to add a little canned if Taste of the Wild makes it. DebK you have no idea what you are talking about

Here's my question. Why are you raw feeding you dog? Don't you know they can get salmonella just like humans? People think that because dogs descended from wolves that it is ok to raw feed. But in reality, these dogs are house pets that have been bred down to eat store food, or food that you make yourself specifically for their needs. Maybe this would be a good time to switch him over for good.....?

I reckon 2 weeks is fine. I assume you will be starting with a 90/10 mix and gradually moving to 100% kibble.

I think 2 weeks is good. But just giving you an idea, you don't have to go to dry kibble. If you want you can take the dry kibble and soak it in boiling water. Or take canned dog food. And just to let you know, you can raw feed him. You can buy a cooler, it's like a big box, but with refrigeration. We have one and we take it all the time. It's really useful for frozen burgers and bread and vegetables and dog food. Some you can plug into your car outlet, but if your car is older and does not have a car outlet you can buy the ones powered by batteries.

You should start now and gradually do it, this way it won't cause a tummy upset.....just little by little each day along with raw diet, then about 8 days before you leave, graduate each day to Taste of the Wild only..' ' I feed all my dogs this, they love it,. great choice

Iggy's Demon Rocks N Rules

change the food as soon as possible, that way he has about 1 month to get adjusted to it and stick with bison

Wedgie Dude

Switch him gradually in a 2 week period. You can use the Bison one if Tiger does good on it. Add some canned meat in it. And most of all have a safe and FUN trip! And I'm guessing no computer for 5 days too. :(

Have you thought about using raw that's freeze dried? There are several companies that do this. This way, you'll be able to transport it without worrying bout refridgeration. With freeze dried, you can give it to them as is or add some water to it.
