Are there any good dog websites?

Dog breeders & Websites? How do you feel about them?

  • Just wanted to get some opinions on how people feel about dog breeders having websites. Scenario: a reputable German shepherd breeder has a basic website saying they have only one litter a year-TOPS. They show their dogs for Conformation, Their dogs are Canine Good Citizens, Schutzhund trained etc. How would you feel about purchasing a dog from them?

  • Answer:

1 litter a year isn't a breeder, it's a hobbyist. One thing to be careful of when buying from a hobbyist (especially someone who isn't older or never has had a large kennel) is that a hobbyist might have been breeding for 30 years and only produced 15 litters. That's not a lot of experience! To me a "real" kennel should produce at least 8 litters a year, it's the only way to figure out what combinations work for you as a breeder, giving you what you want. I love Mink, but Mink throws some smaller dogs when bred to the wrong lines and snipey heads when bred to others, a hobbyist is more prone to those mistakes because they haven't been there and done that! That said, advertising on the internet whether you have 1 litter a year, or 15, is fine. The problem with advertising on the internet is that ANYBODY can stumble onto your site. The only times I ever advertised was in Schutzhund USA magazine...that limited my audience to who I wanted as a breeder, working homes. Btw Weasel Kisses, your profile picture is hilarious, I tried to put up one yesterday but I'm technologically handicapped and couldn't change a bitmap into a jpg...

I see nothing wrong with a Reputable breeder having a site with in depth information about there breeding program, explanation about the health test, contract, guarantee, titles and contact information. I would also like to see that they have links to the breed club However it should stop there, they don't need to have the standard puppy poised in some flowers in the arms of a kid, they do not need to state that they are NOT a puppy mill, they should not be shipping puppies next day air and they should not accept pay-pal, mastercard, visa. Their religious affiliation does not need to be added and offering a drawing for a free puppy----I think not

If the website exists to showcase their dogs and their accomplishments (and hopefully educate people on the breed itself), I have no problem with it. If it's primary purpose is to sell puppies, or explain why "you should buy your puppy from us", it's a big advertisement, and I have a lot less respect for the breeder involved. I've had a website for 11 years. Its main purpose seems to be showcasing rescues, since that's what I find myself updating the most. It also shares my dogs' pictures, pedigrees, and accomplishments with friends in my breed. There is also information on the breed, and breed specific health problems. I've had 8 litters in those 11 years...and, yes, they've been mentioned, too, in their own section. But they aren't what the website is about.

I feel that if they are not advertising then its fine. The ones that have pop ups and pay pal and credit card info are bad. Most reputable breeders do have websites. I have a website that is under construction at the moment, i have had it for 4 years. I would purchase the dog if i wanted a GSD depending on what health tests they did. Just cause the breeder has a website does not automatically mean they are bad. You can easily spot the bad one cause they are horribly put together looks like a 3 year old does them. A website is a great way to showcase their dogs achievements and showcase their litters. I have pics of my litters on mine but never did i say the were for sale on my site. Many reputable breeders have pics of their litters on their site, doesn't make them bad. Its when they have pics and prices next to the and a button to put a deposit down that makes a breeder bad. EDIT- Then i would say that breeder is an excellent breeder of GSD's and if i was looking for one i would highly consider this person.

Yes their are websites with excellent reputable breeders...but I always like to be upfront and in close contact with the person I am going to receive a puppy from...that way I get to see the mother and father dog in real life and see the puppy's housing condition.

That's what I look for in a breeder's website.. they dont use sites to sell the puppies.. they use their websites for info about themsevles, their dogs, the breed in general.. show/title brags, to post pedigrees, to post health information, their contract/guarantee, etc

I have a web site for my dogs and I am a reputable breeder. Just because I have a web site does not mean I sell puppies to anyone. I only breed a litter once a year, sometimes it will be even longer between pups. I do put puppy announcement on my site but usually all of my puppies are "pre-sold" before the mating is even done.. (I live on an island in Australia where there are only a few reputable breeders) Web sites give people an idea of what sort of dogs you breed... I have all my dogs pedigrees and tests results in plain view for everyone to see. If someone e-mails and enquires about a puppy then I will call them and find out if they are genuine or not. I then organise for a meeting in THEIR home so I can see where the puppy will be living.

There is nothing wrong with a breeder having a web site. That way you can see pictures of their stock. My BF has one for her poms. She shows her kennel set up. Shows all her stock and the situation they are kept in. She shows puppies as they grow from birth to showing. She shows her wins in dog shows. Also people who have purchased puppies send her pictures to show their development and their show wins (if they were bought for show). Here main source of customers are in Europe and Russia. Many of her dogs do well in the European dog show. It is an excellent way to see what you are wanting to get. Many times breeders are too far away to visit . But as with anything else. Do you homework. Ask for references and if they wont accommodate you-stay clear. As for the GSD breeder. Sounds good to me.

Nothing wrong with having a website. Some sites are more elaborate than others, but that doesn't mean that they have better or worse dogs than anyone else. You have to speak with the breeder, visit their home, see their dogs, ask to see all genetic testing results, show records, etc. Not everyone has the capability of creating a website that looks like the cover of Vogue. A website doesn't sell a dog....reputation and responsibility does.

I would definitely go and see their dogs. It sounds like they are breeding dogs of sound temperament and with great minds, as well as health. A GSD that can have titles at both ends of their name is a great thing. (Meaning conformation and performance) I know many reputable breeders with web pages. I think the more reputable people that have them perhaps the less people would go to BYBs and mills. (Ok I am wishing) However a lot of reputable breeders WILL NOT put up web pages because of the lunatic animal rights people who will harass them and try to cause problems.
