How do I find a breeding mentor?

Where can i find a breed mentor, to learn more about breeding dogs instead of just sticking them together?

  • People say find a local mentor but, where can i find a breed mentor ? People do not fill up saying do not do it for the money, do it for improving the breed, i know i know.

  • Answer:

Hello, Thanks for asking questions before breeding. The best place to start is the AKC website. Find some local events in your area and talk to people who have your breed, tell them you are looking to get a breeder mentor and they can help you. Also, check out your national breed club (usually you can find this by googling "your breed club of america" i.e. "Golden Retriever Club of America") www.akc.org/events Best of luck!

A local kennel club. If you're in the U.S., go here and search for nearby clubs - http://www.akc.org/clubs/search/index.cfm .

1) Go to a local dog show and hang out by the breed ring/crating area of the breed you like. Strike up conversations with people who have dogs you like (just make sure not to interrupt right before they go into the ring) or even offer to help - hold a leash, carry a grooming bag, etc. 2) Go to the AKC parent club website for the breed and find a list of their member breeders, call the one closest to you and explain what your goals are 3) Start training and showing the dog you have (or a neighbor's dog, or a friend's dog) in obedience or agility and you'll naturally meet others who show in those areas - ask if they breed or who their mentors were 4) If you're under 18, get an AKC Juniors number and start showing your dog in Jr. Showmanship 5) Travel to the National for your breed and immerse yourself in that world for awhile, people go there to talk about their breed and to meet others interested in their breed Not everyone who shows or breeds makes a good mentor, here's a brief list: -Experience with the breed, at least ten years -Competes with their breeding stock in many/all the areas you are interested in (herding, show ring, etc) -Member in good standing of the AKC parent club -Good sport, ethical when competing, etc; no backbiting other competitors or questionable practices -Dogs are close to the ideal, have the titles to prove it, and are the kind of dogs you want to breed (i.e. not a field-type breeder if you want to show conformation) -Active in rescue and local dog clubs -Agrees to be your mentor and is located where this is feasible, can meet your expectations and has clear expectations of you Good luck!

well you start by going to some local dog shows. See what they do, find a breed you like, meet some breeders while you are there and asks lots of questions after you get to know some of them ask one of them if they could mentor you and maybe offer something in return, kennel assistance ect.

Jess.

Contact your local breed club, what ever your breed is. There will be someone there or some one you can call.
