My dog keeps trying to scratch his back-end, what to do?
-
He has had his glands removed, and the vet has tried everything. Steroid shots, topical creme, pills and nothing helps. He will be fine for a couple of months and then suddenly he starts scooting around and trying to scratch back there? I don't know what to do anymore and I feel so bad for him. I even changed his dogfood, thinking that maybe he had allergies to it. (He dosen't have worms)

Are you feeding him a higher-priced food? Purina and the cheaper ones are filled with by-products. Make sure he is getting a high quality food. You could even look into a food that has no grains, perhaps he has a grain allergy, which can be common. I know there is a brand out (maybe a few) there that has no grains, they use tapioca instead. However I don't remember the name, sorry. May want to try that though. Another thing you could look into is switching him to a natural food diet. There are many books ("The heart of the Matter" was my favorite book where I learned about natural diets- see link below) and websites that tell you how and what to feed your dog. My dog ate natural food for many years and did excellent. Kept him very healthy. He would get a protein- hamburger, chicken or even just beans. A veggie- whatever was on sale in the frozen food section. And a carb- usually brown rice that I would buy in bulk at Costco. I have a 45lb dog and it cost very little to feed him this way, perhaps less then with dog food. And I think the health benefits much out way the work. If you have busy schedule, take an hour or two on a Saturday, make all the food and bag it up, stick it in the fridge and your ready for the week. Good Luck. Hope your pooch feels better very soon.

I read your question a couple times. It seems to me your Vet has covered everything. BUT, something is still not right for the poor animal.....The only thing I can offer is if it were my dog, I would see another Vet. Just because the dog is suffering. It won't hurt and you will feel like you are doing something. A second opinion never hurts and a new view might discover something else.......If the dog is fine for a couple months and the scooting starts again, that might mean something too.

try holistic meds.or shampoo from the health food store?sounds like a rash. treat with jock itch cream? could be the same kind of "bug" that causes ring worm, and jock itch and atheleets foot. a( a fungus)?thying this kind of cream couldnt hurt and might just be the prob. you can catch this from dirt outside.

Why were his glands removed? So he was itching before the glands were removed also? Maybe you should seek a second opinion. Do you change his food often? Have you checked for fleas/ticks? Does he go outside a lot, and if he does, do you have him de-wormed regularly? What kind of food did you change it to? Is he neutered? These all may be factors. You may want to try Hill's prescription (and i emphasize on prescription) Science Diet Z/D. This food comes in low and ultra low allergen-possibly one or the other. But, you may also want to consider a specialist, or just a regular second opinion. Best of luck to you and your doggy.

Try putting a little dab of Preparation H on his butt. He could have an itch, and the more he scoots, the more irritated it gets. It won't hurt him. I have to do this to my pom. every once in a while.
