Industrial Injuries medical-what should I expect?

My dog was run over and seriously injured, what can I expect now?

  • This morning my dog Nelson (a CollyXBelgianShepherd) was run over, my father was putting him in the car after a walk and he escaped and ran out into the road, I have just finished talking to the vet and the news is, to be frank, bad. F/L paw has a shearing injury, he is going to lose his dew claw and one from his paw F/R and R/R paws are damaged but, will be OK. R/L leg will be amputated on Friday, if there is no sign of infection from the other injuries. The injuries are quite mucky, because he ran onto the moor straight afterwards, the Vet is doing his best to clean them up He has cut his face quite badly but the vet has stitched it up and is confident it should heal. The vet says he is quite 'bright' considering the extent of his injuries and I have been told him I can see him at 1600 BST today (UK). I'm not trolling for sympathy, I would like any good advice and tips about What can I expect from the next few days and indeed the next few months as his injuries slowly heal (hopefully) and maybe some tips from people with experience of rehabilitating and training a three legged dog. He is insured. (mercifully). Thanks :(

Sounds like baring infection your vet thinks he has a good chance of recovery. Even with major surgery like leg amputation dogs recover quickly. You aren't looking at months of recovery he will recover much quicker that than that from his injuries. Assuming he the injury to his right side is not sever enough to keep him from walking he will likely be up and about the day of or the day after his surgery and in short order will be running about like he's not missing a leg. The lack of a dew claw definatly won't impare him (most breeders remove dewclaws to prevent injuries anyway) and the lack of a single toe shouldn't have any major impact either.

The majority of dogs that lose a leg do just fine after recovery. In fact the majority don't even know they lost a leg. So I would not worry about that. I would just try and keep that dog calm and well rested. Thats the best thing for that dogs recovery.

i'm sorry for your dog. once they get used to walking on three legs, they hardly seem to miss the fourth. just watch closely for signs of infection.

Sorry mate I don't have much advise to give, just make sure he gets all the rest he needs and make him comfortable, dogs are highly adaptable and I'm sure he'll become accustomed to his handicap in time. Remember to make sure he doesn't lick his wounds or bite his stitches. I'm sure the vet will give you better tips than I ever could when you pick him up. All excellent news RA,good luck tomorrow but it sounds like he'll do fine. The only up side of the whole thing is that now he'll have a healthy fear of the road and will not make the same mistake again(hopefully). Best wishes. Pet his little head for me.

I had a dog get run over by a car a few years ago.. he was cut up and lost his back right leg... He is fine now, he learned to walk on three legs. and the cuts healed up. it did take him a wile but he is fine now! he still loves to play fetch and all the things that he use to do... Good luck but he should be OK it will take a long time to get over it but best of luck!

Tripod dogs actually do very well, and I'm sure yours will also. I wish we could see him; a collie x BS is probably gorgeous. The loss of a toe on a weight bearing area is inconvenient, but not necessarily a big problem. I've seen dogs with missing toes get around quite well. It sounds like the injuries are far less than they could have been. I know, it's difficult when these things can happen in an instant. I'm sure that wasn't at all foreseen. Give your guy lots of support, ask the vet for pain management while he heals; research has shown that surgery/injury patients heal much faster if they are not experiencing the stress of pain. It sounds like you and he will be fine. God bless.

oh I am so sorry to hear this! I will be praying for him. When he comes home, make him as comfortable as possible and make sure you understand what the vet is telling you toward the medication. If they are pills, use lunch meat. Dogs don't know they just ate a pill cause all they tasted was lunch meat. Good luck and I hope he stays 'bright'!

sorry to hear about your pooch. It's honestly to early to know.

Dogs don't "take" or need "months of rehab....",dear. Animals heal fast. They have 3 other legs & DON'T lie around bemoaning their fate.
