  • I am writing an article for my school newspaper. I want to write an article about stray animals and how can we help them. I have a couple questions. 10 points best answer. If I can get some answers from someone who works at the humane socitey that would be great. 1. Because of the Economy could there be more stray cats and dogs because owners can't afford to take care of them. 2. What American cities have more stray rescuses than all? 3. About how many animals are ethinized a year? 4. What to do when you come across a stray? ( How can I help a stay) Thanks alot!!!! p.s. do you know anyway where i can call/email/talk to someone who might know most of these answers!! Thanks again!!

  • Answer:

    1. It has been reported that many of those who have lost their homes have left the pets behind to fend for themselves. 2. That would depend on the cities population and ratio of owners to pets. Iive in a city with over 200,000 people and see strays in a neighborhood near mine, mostly dogs, all the time. It is so very sad. 3. Varies greatly from city to city and how a shelter takes responsibility of finding homes. 4. I feed them and now have 3 in my house. A neighbor dumped a litter so I took on and the neighbor took 2. I already had a cat so I was unable to take more until about a month ago when a mom and baby showed up on my porch. Caught them two weeks ago, and am on the waiting list for low cost spay. You can either take them to a shelter or bring them in to be your own pet or socialize them and look for forever homes for these strays.( including spaying/neutering. The ASPCA is an excellent organization who can answer your question thoroughly and honestly. Thank you for caring. My dog and 3 of my 4 cats were strays)

There are a lot more stray animals, and people who are just dropping off their pets because of the economy. It's sad but true. If you have kids, bills to pay (which all of us do) what are you going to put first? Missouri has a ton of stray/rescue organizations that any other state that I have seen. As far as "cities" I would say St. Louis is among the top. 3-4 MILLION animals are ethinized per year. This number is just going to continue to grow. When you come across a stray, call your local humane society. Hopefully someone will adopt that animal, or help it find its way home. It's better than leaving it out on the streets.

1. Yes more animals are becoming homeless. 2. New York, Saint Louis alot of Northern States. 4.3-4 million (just cats and dogs) 5. Pick the animal up and offer it your home or try to find it a home.

Yes. Sadly too many people would prefer to give up a great companion instead of their Tivo. You'd have to look up some statistics to find out number 2. Same with number 3 It depends on if the stray is friendly or wary. A dog that won't allow me to approach it is more likely to be afraid so I'll call the local shelter. But I have found a few who were quite happy to hop right into my car with me so I could take it to the shelter myself. If the dog has tags on it I will call the number on the tag or license and try to find it's owner before taking it to the shelter though. My current dog is a stray I rescued off the streets of Pittsburgh.

1. I have seen and talked to many people who have had to get rid of there animals because they cannot afford to stay in a house and have to move into a apartment that doesn't allow animals. I have even talked to people who went as far as putting their animals down because they couldn't bare to leave them in a shelter (No kidding) 2. I believe large cities like new york, Los Angles, etc..? 3. The American Humane Association uses these numbers to estimate that currently 9.6 million animals are euthanized in the United States every year.? 4. I usually call animal control because you don't know if the animal is sick and could infect your animals? ( How can I help a stay)
