What to feed a dog with colitis?

Dog Food, What Do You Feed???? And Why?

  • Okay, I need some help here please from all you expert dog owners and breeders.... I am now feeding Taste of the Wild, and my dogs have been on it for well over a year now. I am in Lexington, Ky right now, I went to the local feed store and bought my ususal size bag of TOTW. I got back to my friends house, opened the food to feed all my boys, I put it down for Demon first, hardly sniffed it, took his front paw and dumped it and walked away...He has never done this before. Then I put the food down for Koda, Bear and Nikki, all my dogs hardly sniffed it and left it, would not return to the bowl area at all. I took up the food, smelled of it, it smelled funny, I opened the huge bag up, took a good wiff, it smelled very strong of something, it kinda burned my nose....I put the food back into the bag, took it back to the feed store, the men there said it did not smell right, they pulled some other bags, opened them and they had the same smell.....I ask had they put this food by any chemicals in the back before putting it out in front to be sold, I was told, no never, the feeds are on one side and the chemicals and pesticides in a different part of the warehouse in back. I then went to a different feed store, told them what had happened and they checked one of their smaller bags, they opened it, it had such a strong burning smell to the smell, they pulled their bags as well. Has anyone else had any problems with Taste of the Wild?? My dogs have always loved this food and do so great on it........ I also called my local feed store back home, and Bill put me on hold, came back, he said he had opened a bag, and it smelled just fine, no strong odors...So, could it be this shipment to Lexington been bad for just this area....... Has anyone else had problems with Taste of the Wild, Please let me know. I kept a quart size bag of it out and have shipped it to Taste of the Wild today, to the manufacturer of this shipment for this area only....The Texas Area manufacturer does not ship to KY anywhere... I have also went on line and emailed TOTW customer service to see what they say... I cannot find any recalls for them, I have never seen recalls for TOTW..... Also, does anyone feed Wellness, I have never used this dog food, and hear it is very good, I went to Petco today and got Wellness Chicken Formula Dry....all my dogs ate it really good..... I do like the ingredients in it better than TOTW, so may change to Wellness totally now.... Legit::;What dog food do you feed and why......And does anyone on YA feed Wellness and if you do, please let me know what you think of it... A neighbor of my friend here feeds all his Golden's Wellness she said, so I talked to them, and their dogs look really good. Thank you for responding....Please star, I want as many opinions on Wellness as I can get......From what I have seen on the ingredients and their website has really good ingredients, no byproducts at all. Again, thank you very much....

I feed TOTW and just bought 2 bags Wed. 1 High Prairie and 1 Pacific Salmon. I have not had any problems with it nor has any of the people I know that feed it. If you had a problem I would look into where you bought it and their distributor. TOTW is a better food then Wellness (unless you are considering Wellness CORE which is grain free). A grain free food is better then grain inclusive, although a grain inclusive food that doesn't contain corn, wheat & soy is a LOT better then one that does. I feed both the dry TOTW and the canned. ****Taste of the Wild did their own recall a while back, not because of anything bad concerning the food but becasue there may have been another meat protein source in the Pacific Salmon manufactured at one of theri plants. While this would not usually be a problem in a dog with no allergies it could be if a dog was allergic to the other protein source.*******

I feed Canidae All Life Stages. It's at the lower end of the price range for a mostly meat, corn/wheat/soy/filler/artificial color-preservative-flavor free food. Runs about 1.17 a pound here in the 35 pound bag. All ingredients are sourced in the US, too. Been quite happy with it. TOTW did have a recall a little while back. I think it was only on one flavor and it was voluntary. If you get a funny bag of anything, you need the lot numbers as well as the sample to best help the manufacturer track it down. I'm pretty sure TOTW is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, so maybe there is a Diamond problem? (Some Canidae formulas are also manufactured by Diamond, so if you're squeamish about Diamond right now, you'd need to call Canidae to check which labels are produced through Diamond.)

I feed pedigree. Have done all my dogs life. He loves it and does extremely well on it. That's why i feed it. Switching to a higher quality food didn't work out too good! So, i learned my lesson.

I currently feed a Raw Diet because of my dogs allergies and other health issues. I can honestly say that switching my dog to Raw was the best decision for his health I ever made. So I feed Raw mainly because my dog has severe allergies and the Raw food helps him. In the past I have fed TOTW and used Wellness Core and Wellness Large breed. I currently know several people who feed TOTW and they have not had any problems. A good friend of mine also owns a Natural Petstore and sells the food and I know she has not had problems. But TOTW is a grain free food that uses different meat sources. Wellness Core is Wellness's Grain Free Food and it is more costly than TOTW. Natures Variety makes Instinct which is Grain Free and they use several different meat sources like TOTW the wild. Wellness primarily uses chicken. I think from experience dogs do better on Grain Free foods like TOTW, Wellness Core or Natures Variety Instinct. Wellness is a great food and I really liked the Wellness Core. They are a great company and if you do decide to switch to their food go to their website and join their email club because each month they send great coupons for their food.

I feed TOTW and I haven't had an issue. I will smell my bag when I get home to make sure. My dogs love this food and do great on it! I have never had an issue with it. Try wellness core its there grain free version and more similar to TOTW. Good luck!

Rogue Bullies

I'd been feeding Blue Buffalo until they apparently did a "slight" formula change & one of my dogs didn't handle it well. The other dog who eats it had no problems- I still feel it's a decent quality food. My 3rd dog, Tana, does best on grain-free (too rich for the other 2); she eats Blue Wilderness- made by the same company but is grain free. Occasionally I buy a small bag of TOTW to stretch Tana's bag of Wilderness, since I have to drive 120 miles one-way to buy it. TOTW is available at tractor supply much closer, but Tana doesn't maintain her weight on it. She does alright with a 50-50 mix of the two foods. I have not noticed any funny smells (bought a bag 2 weeks ago) BUT since the store is in a small town, they don't sell a ton of food & it takes a while for the shelf stock to fully "rotate". If they did something funky with the formula, it might not show up in my local TSC for a while. I am glad you said something; I'll keep my eyes out. As far as Wellness; I know a lot of people who feed it with good results. I also hear a lot about Orijen. I've never tried it since, as I said, it's such a long drive to buy any of the really "premium" foods and if I switched to something that didn't work, I'd end up making a billion trips. I'll stick with what works for now! Now that Blue Buffalo isn't working for one dog, I'm trying them on a new one- Grandma Mae's Country Naturals. It doesn't look too bad; seems comparable to Blue....and according to the company the ingredients are all sourced from the US, which is WAY more important to me than the presence of 'beet pulp' or whatever halfway down the list. If your dogs do well on grain free, you'll probably want to stick to that, however. Good luck! :)

I have fed Wellness. Most of my dogs didn't take to it very well. That does NOT mean this food isn't good. My dogs are weird. I am currently switching from Diamond Naturals to EVO. So far it has been a week of mixing and in the next 2 weeks they will be on it completely. My daughter did some extensive research and decided this food was the best out there for all of my dogs. I have to say even though I have not completely switched their stools are firmer, darker, I don't have to feed as much and they are having less bowel movements. So, I am an Evo fan.

I feed Innova Evo Red Meat Small Bites and my dog does very well on it. I have heard good things about Wellness Core. That's very strange about the TOTW, it's what I feed my cats, and they do great on it. It's excellent that you have brought it to their attention though.

I feed my dog primarily Halo's,Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural & TOTW Wetlands.I feed these brands it's low grain & grain free.My maltese/toy poodle does well on low grain & grain free dog food.I did try Wellness but my dog gets soft bowels on most of the Wellness formulas.

Hey Iggy How are you? My guys are stuck on Flint River Trout and some Raw(venison is their favorite). I have the best luck with this mixture so why mess with success. LOL I can just picture your dog dumping it in the floor
