Getting a dog into work mode?

• What's the best way to get my dog into "work mode"? Like how they say every dog needs a job... how do i communicate to my dog that this is their "job" My g/f has been working with my pitt/lab on basic commands and she'll do anything for my gf to throw her retirever toy into the water. How can i get her to completely focus on this task my gf knows a guy with a BC and his dog is ALWAYS in "work mode" with him. The dog doesn't do anything until the guy gives him permission. is this just because of the breed? what can i do to get my dog into work mode?

  This will depend on the dogs bond with you. Clearly the dog has a better bond with your partner and respects her much more. Spend more time alone with the dog, training him. Present your self in an authoritative way so that your dog knows you mean business. However some people are natural dog trainers while others have no idea. I can quite easily get my dogs to do anything I want them to do, whereas no matter how hard my mum tries, they just don't listen to her the same way.
