How well do you know your dog breed? Daily Question Number 1?

  • FUN QUESTION! Let's see how long it stays up! I decided to ask a fun question per day from now on to warm up things here. 1) What was your breed originally bred to do? 2) When was your breed accepted by the AKC? 3) Where did your breed originally came from? 4) What are the breed's biggest health problems? 5) What are common "misunderstandings" within your breed? 6) How do you most easily recognize a badly bred dog? 7) Name one designer dog that is ruining your breed. 8) What breeds is your breed most confused with? 9) What are any famous people that own or own your dog breed, or famous dogs? 10) Got any trivia on the breed? My answers: *SAMOYED* 1) Herd reindeers. 2) Early 1900... Hold on, I know it. It's 1906! 3) Developed by the Samoyede people of Siberia. 4) SHG, Samoyed Hereditary Glomerulopathy, and hip dysplasia - I informed myself before getting one. 5) I don't think there are any. That famous "Sami Smile" pretty much gives away how most Samis are. 6) I never saw a badly bred Samoyed in my entire life. Impressive, uh? 7) Actually none... Once again, either I'm NOT informed or we're pretty lucky. 8) I had people asking if my dogs were an Eskimo Dog. 9) I heard that their shedded fur is used as alternative wool. LMAO 10) Xiah Junsu, member of South Korean boy band TVXQ, owns a Samoyed named Shaki. OK, this one was from Wikipedia. Roald Amundsen owned one too, I think. IRISH RED AND WHITE SETTER: 1) Hunting Dogs... 2) 2009. 3) Ireland! D'oh! 4) Hip Dysplasia is a main concern, I guess, some retina issues as well. 5) I think all Setters have this, not Red and White's in particular, but ALL of them, specially the Reds. Everyone thinks they are crazy and lunatic. They are if not well exercised, dummies. 6) Never had the *luck* to meet one, but I saw a few crazy Reds that gave the breed their lovely bad rep. 7) Irish-Doodle... *shivers* 8) A giant Brittany! 9) They were only accepted by the AKC this last year, folks! 10) NO IDEA. Suggested Category FAIL: Sports > Horse Racing (!)

  • Answer:

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS: 1) What was your breed originally bred to do? *Herd 2) When was your breed accepted by the AKC? *1991 3) Where did your breed originally came from? *United States is the simple answer 4) What are the breed's biggest health problems? *probably hip dysplasia and there are issues with epliepsy as well. There's also problems if you have lethal whites. 5) What are common "misunderstandings" within your breed? *Misunderstandings? Hmmm...I don't know. I *do* feel that far too many people are attracted to the appearance of an Aussie, and not the actual dog. 6) How do you most easily recognize a badly bred dog? *I'm really not very into conformation, but color's a pretty easy thing to spot--for example, to much white on the body. Also, a dog that is extremely lazy or has no drive whatsoever, of any kind. 7) Name one designer dog that is ruining your breed. *The infamous "mini" and "toy" Aussies. Also the "Aussiedoodle"--but poodle mixes are pretty bad for any breed (no offense to poodle owners...the mixes hurt poodles as well). 8) What breeds is your breed most confused with? *Border Collie. Sometimes a Collie or Sheltie (though I really can't see that one). Black tricolors have been mistaken for Bernese Mountain Dogs (usually when they're younger though). 9) What are any famous people that own or own your dog breed, or famous dogs? *I'll go with the obvious...Jay Sisler 10) Got any trivia on the breed? *There are really two 'color' categories--black and red. They can come with various degrees of white or tan (not excessively white, though), or can be merled (blue merle falls under the 'black' color category).

They are registered by the AKC under the color of chocolate. That is the closest they will ever get. Here is the Labrador Retriever Club's stance on the silver lab (and they are the parent club and THEY are the ones who set the standard) "There is no genetic basis for the silver gene in Labradors. The silver color is a disqualification under the Standard for the breed. The LRC does not recognize, accept or condone the sale or advertising of any Labrador as a silver Labrador. The Club opposes the practice of registering silver as chocolate." http://www.thelabradorclub.com/subpages/show_contents.php?page=Silver The truth behind silver Lab http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/silverlabs.html

Chinese Crested 1) Hairless dogs were bred for food, bed warmers (that dont harbor fleas and crawling pests!), and also for their "medicinal" values.. it was believed that if someone was ill with fever if they slept in bed with a hairless dog it would cure them. They DO make nice heating pads! 2) 1991 3) Actual origin is unknown. Many sources "claim" China.. but that is not true. There are archealogical findings that indicate many hairless dogs were found in areas of south america, and stories of seeing hairless dogs at port cities.. likely travelers would have taken hairless dogs back home with them as novelties where they were traded and sold. 4) Among reputable bloodlines.. PRA is the biggest issue. Many rescue people see dogs with dry eye, luxating patella, legges perthe, closed ear canals, and Ive heard of a few with liver or kidney issues. 5) That they have weak immune systems. Ive yet to hear of one with immunity issues. Also a myth that you cannot breed hairless to hairless. Any embryo that gets the double hairless gene just simply does not develop or is reabsorbed by the mother. Talking to breeders, they get very few stillborns, but the majority of those stillborns were puffs anyways, not hairless! 6) Overall type, some dogs obviously dont fit the standard.. very bad skin can be another indication.. poor coat type on a puff. 7) There are a few designer breeds, but there's not a big demand for them- thankfully. 8) Mexican hairless 9) Nicholas Cage actually owns Chinese Cresteds. There is a Vet on one of the ER Vet shows that also owns them.. I cannot remember his name offhand now. ADDED Dr Kevin Fitzgerald is his name. 10) The breed comes in 2 varieites,, hairless and powderpuff- both of which can be found in the same litter.

Labs have been way over bred due to their popularity but their biggest health problems are hip dysplasia, peripheral retinal atrophy, retinal dysplasia, elbow dyplasia. 5.) Some people think that they are quite low energy dogs, which is not true especially when they are pups and young adults. Many times I hear " Golden Lab" there is no such thing. Actually some refer to a Lab bred with a Golden Retriever as a Golden Lab. There are only 3 colors accepted by the AKC while many people believe there are more. 6.) Head Structure. Labs should have the block head while many breeders breed the American type they lose that wonderful head. I know some Lab people LOVE their American style but the original Labs are blocky. 7.) The Pomeranian Most everyone is familiar with that little ball of fluff, with the foxy face, a personality that is infectious and vibrant, and a coat so full and luxuriant it is like that ball of fluff. There are not very many who are aware of the fact that this breed of dog has its origins in the Arctic ice of Iceland and Lapland. It claimed a genetic bond to the Alaskan Malamute, the Samoyed and the Siberian Husky, they were "cousins", within the Spitz family of canines. Of course, the Pomeranian then was a great deal larger than the dog we know today, averaging about thirty pounds. This dog earned its keep by being a sled dog. As explorers came in contact with the native people, they would bring back the native dogs to their homes. Eventually, these native dogs ended up in an area of Germany known as Pommerania. In Germany these dogs were used to herd livestock. It is said that among the first to officially import the Pomeranian breed of dog to England was Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III. It must be stated here that at this time the Pomeranian was still a large-type dog. It seems that on the continent of Europe, the wealthy people were looking for small, companion dogs. The Pom was a lovely dog, bright, intelligent, and eager to please, but it was so large. This is when the down sizing of the breed started. When Queen Victoria went to Italy, she returned home with the Pomeranian we are more familiar with. The Pom became very popular in England, with the down sizing of the breed continuing. Todays Pomeranian for the show ring weighs between 3-7 pounds.
