Does neutering a dog change their personality? What are the pros and cons?
-
I have a 5 year old male dog (a mutt, probably part poodle but not the standard type). I got him when I was 8 and I have a bad memory so I thought he was 3 so when it was cleared up he was 5 i'm a bit scared about how long he'll live even though our vet said he is perfectly fine at our recent check up. The reason I'm so skeptical is because our first dog only died when he was 9 and he was un-neutered, I'm not saying he died because his testicles were in tack but they say when you neuter/spay an animal they tend to live longer. My dog is calm unless annoyed of course, the only real problem he has when it comes to agression is barking at other dogs only he doesn't chase them or bite with the exception of one dog we avoid. Will neutering change his personality drastically or barley, and what do you think are the pros and cons of neutering/spaying.

Answer:
Neutering a dog like yours will probaby have little if any affect on his personality! You said he is usually calm so i doubt you would see any change! Unless you are planning on breeding him the best thing you can do is get him neutered. Neutering has proven to increase life span! In the lomg run he will be a happier dog. Dogs that arent neutered can get testicular cancer and other problems. Like i said, unless you plan to breed him i would neuter him! :D

Neutering will NOT change his personality AT ALL. Neutered animals tend to live longer and they don't contribute to the massive number of dogs, cats, kittens and puppies killed in shelters EVERY DAY. Neutered males are far less likely to run away, bite or fight.

it's personality may be un-changed or calmer by a degree but not to the point of being drastic, pros: won't have that sex drive for female dogs better overall pet cons: possible reactions to surgery none other cons.

The only thing neutering stps is the ability to reproduce. There are a lot of health risks with neutering a dog as they NEED the hormones

Neutering might actually make him MORE friendly towards other dogs, but otherwise shouldn't change him at all! It's a quick surgery that vets do every day, so it's not considered "major" surgery, which is good! Definitely the pros outweigh the cons. He will still be the same dog that you love, and you will be doing a good thing by preventing him from mating with other dogs! There are too many unwanted puppies in the world - he doesn't need to be creating any more by accident!!
