How do I start a pit bull rescue in South Carolina?

  • I want to start a small rescue out of my home, only about two or three dogs at a time. I know alot of shelters put them down if they arent adopted within a certain amount of time, so I want to take a couple and rescue them out. Im just not sure how to do so. I dont want to go through the whole non-profit thing either.

    Ask your neighbers to help you out with donations, in time they'll spread the word and perhaps put up flyers asking people to help out.

I would recommend instead volunteering to be a foster home for an existing pit bull rescue in your area. Foster homes are ALWAYS needed. Starting a rescue from scratch is very difficult, time-consuming, and EXPENSIVE. And if you're not interested in "going through the whole non-profit thing either" then you will likely find that you won't get much financial support from donors, vets, or from organizations that make donations to non-profits. You may have problems pulling dogs from shelters if you are not a qualified non-profit rescue. You may also get a questionable reputation from other members of the rescue community, because we sometimes wonder if "private rescuers" are actually *rescuing*, or just looking to make money by adopting dogs from shelters and then selling them under the guise of being a "rescue".
