Why end a play on a cliffhanger?

Does my dog play too rough? How can I help?

  • I have two pitbulls. The male, Tungsten, is 1 1/2yrs old and the female, Lily, is just about 7 months. My male is generally outside and my female is an indoor dog. Tungsten is stuck in his puppy mind. He does not obey that well, and is all play all the time even when he is in trouble. Lily (female) is very smart. It was as if she could practically train herself. She is the most loving, laid back Pit I have seen. BUT... when they are together... The problem isn't when they are playing, because they can run for a good hour and rest a bit and then play some more. The issue is that when Tungsten wants to rest and relax, Lily is very aggressively trying to get him engaged in more play. I've noticed that at the end of the play time when Lily is back in the house that she has at least one cut somewhere on her body. At first I thought that it was Tungsten getting annoyed with her always wanting to play and he is trying to tell her to stop. But one day I decided to go outside with them and see how they play. They ran and ran and when Tungsten was getting tired she continued to run at him and he started to run away. Lily began to get aggressive and I think even mad because he wasn't paying too much attention to her. So she bit him! She bit his ear and he began to bleed. I immediately put Lily inside and checked up on Tungsten. He was fine but I was able to determine that the reason why Lily had cuts was because she is just too rough and she bumps into everything. At least that's what I could see when I was out there but it could really be anything. I worry because I want them to play together and I just dont know if this is normal behavior or not. I know they like each other because when they arent together they are scratching at the door that separates them trying to play, they drink from the same bowl and the interact in a good way ususally. I just don't know when and if I should interfere if it looks like they are fighting because I don't want it to get out of hand.

  • Answer:

I own a 2 month old pit/boxer mix she likes to play but nips a bit, the key to pitbulls is to get them really social, since the male is a bit older he gets tired fast and the female can't understand that you should take her for a long walk that way she'll get tired faster it may seem like dog aggressive behavior but it's just puppy mode she'll grow out of it soon just keep a close eye on their play because the male might run out of patients and snap, as soon as you see teeth showing separate them hope this helps(:

Pitbulls play rough, and loud. I have a pit/ BMC mix she is the same way when playing with my other dog (a husky) she bites his fur mostly and he gets her back but obviously she gets the scratches because she doesn't have as thick of fur. She is also very clumbsy and hurts herself a lot all though she never acts hurt or anything she just keeps going but at the end of playing she looks all beat up, its really up to you to tell with your own dogs as you know them best if they are showing aggression or just playing rough.
