What common household items/actions do your cats know the purpose and meaning of?

Willie knows that when I pull out my makeup bag, it means I'm leaving. He has a fit when he sees it because he hates for me to leave! Rocky knows when I get a coffee cup out of the cabinet it means I'll possibly "spill" a little milk for him to lap up (I know, I know). Allie knows when I turn off the tv at night, it's bedtime so she races to the bed. It would be interesting to know what things other cats recognize and how it affects them.

Answer:
You "spill" milk huh? :D Binnie knows when I put clothes on her or pick up her harness/leash, it's time to go outside and she runs to the door and begins to purr. Marble knows the sound of a can but I'm pretty sure all cats do. BUT, Marble LOVES (I have NO idea why) to play with balled up panty liners. So whenever I open one, she appears out of absolutely nowhere. So I ball it up and play fetch. lol

Tiny is exactly the same as Allie, but with him its the computer, when it goes off , its bed time, and he always beats me there, Misty on the other hand is much more food orientated, he knows where the bowls are kept, and is totally convinced that all bowls are for his benefit, how a bowl could be used for any other purpose than food for him is totally illogical. Now the fridge where Misty is concerned once again is solely for his benefit, milk, cold meat, all kinds of goodies they come from the fridge, and by sheer logic, must be for him
One of my cats knows what doors are and that I open them by turning the knob (she'll stand up tall and reach for the knob when she wants to get in/out). She also knows what I'm doing when I start to run a bath. She'll hear the water running and come into the bathroom and hang out with me while I'm in there. She knows where windows are even if they're completely covered by blinds/curtains. My other cat knows that when he hears the piano being played, that someone is there and he will get attention if he follows the sound. He knows that the sound of the can opener means he gets his tuna. They both know where their food and treats are kept and where water is even if it's in a closed bottle/container.

Filling her food dish, opening the frig, yelling her name (she knows it's snack time.)

Mine know that when the faucet in the bathroom turns on, it's their cue to jump onto the counter and lap up the tap water. They know that wet cat food (their treat) is in the fridge and will come running when it opens. And one of my cats definitely knows by now what's going to happen when I carry the bag of fluids and a needle into the room she's in. Being a cat with renal failure, I have to give her subcutaneous fluids every day. Oh, and they also know the sound of the crinkly bag of treats.

I love this question! When I say "Oh! What's this?!" Misha comes flying from where ever she is because she knows she's about to get fed wet food. Misha also understands "Get down" or sometimes all I have to do is snap my fingers at her and she gets off of the counter. Misha and Ellie understand that when the toilet flushes that means it's time to leave the bathroom lol. When I pick up my purse, they know I'm leaving and sit infront of the door. When they both get wet food, Ellie finishes first and tries to strong arm her way into Misha's dish. So all I have to say is "Ellie." in a stern voice and she runs away from Misha's dish. Misha plays fetch only with hair ties and sometimes when I fling it she doesn't see where it went or doesn't notice I don't have it anymore. So I'll point in the direction it is and tell her to "Go get it!" she doesn't immediately go but if I keep saying it she'll meander over to where I'm pointing haha.

LOL....great question. Sadie (my little kill shelter rescue who got pulled when she was literally heading to the euthanization chamber) does something similar to Willie. When the make-up goes on, she runs to the bedroom and jumps on the dresser, because she knows when I leave I'll open one of the drawers for her to sleep in. She also comes tearing into the kitchen when she hears the can opener. She doesn't get canned food, but there's always something in that can she wants and usually gets. Mia, my other cat, runs under the middle of our large bed as soon as she sees a suitcase or overnight bag. It means bad news for her, even though most times we travel by car and they're all with us. But she knows she can postpone it if she parks herself right smack in the middle where I can't get to her.

When my cell phone rings Catherine the tortie knows it's lap time and to advise the caller that I'm not the only one in the apartment. She has a loud purr. Minnie, one of the kittens, loves the sound of flowing water so mornings are an adventure. The other four are another story.
