Question about a Not-so-good Kitty- Long question- Hope it makes sense.?
-
I have a 4 month old kitten, We call him Simba. Simba likes to jump on the counters- and EAT ALL FOOD- even bread-cookies-anything available. Simba likes to knock everything over, Simba likes to scratch furniture (sometimes his soft paws nails fall off) He likes to rip and chew things up. I'm sure Simba sounds like any other kitten, but i've never had kittens that caused this much trouble ! I'vs raised only female kittens- this is my first male. I have two older females, spayed. Simba is Not nuetered yet, I'm considering it (they are all strictly indoor kitties). Will neutering change his bad habits? I hope so. As bad as Simba is, he is the most affectionate kitten ever. How can I keep him off the counters!! We put all food away after cooking it!! (We've learned!) But i find him up there several times a day, he jumps off as soon as he sees me! (He knows its wrong) Any tips on stopping bad kitty behaviour?? ALSO they have their own kitty toys/ scratching posts I free feed them. Food is always out. I'm at work most of the day, so i can't moniter bad behaviour..Or scold if i'm not there.

Answer:
You're right, Simba is a typical healthy and lively young kitten. Neutering won't change his manners, but it will prevent him from spraying and eliminate the risk of him developing certain cancers later in life. Rather than disciplining him (which only works when you are there) it's better to make to make the kitchen worktops a less desirable place to be by making them uncomfortable to walk on. You can cover them with foil and put a layer of double sided sticky tape on top. Some cats dislike the feel of those rubber bristle shower mats, so you could even try a couple of those. Cats like to sit up somewhere high so they get a good view of everying going on around them and this may be another reason he likes getting on the work tops. If he doesn't have a cat tree or a window seat overlooking somewhere busy, then it would be a good idea to get him one. If he tries getting on the work tops, take him over to his own lookout spot. If you reward him with food treats for using it, he'll develop a natural preference for it. Museum putty can be used to secure ornaments and valuables in place and will stop him from being able to knock them over. http://www.preservationequipment.com/Store/Products/New-Developments/Quake-Hold-%249-Museum-putty This web site has good articles on keeping indoor cats amused and ways to discourage them from scratching your furniture. http://www.celiahaddon.co.uk/pet%20problems/cats/cat_main.html At four months old Simba is still very much a baby with a lot of life's lessons to learn, but if you are always kind and patient with him, you'll be rewarded with a well mannered cat.

Some kittens and cats are like this. Neutering will not change his personality OR his bad habits. Try putting aluminum foil on the counters, wrinkled up. Cats normally don't like the feel and sound of it under their feet. You can even layer cellophane over top to make it worse. Tape them down if you have to but make sure to wrinkle them up first and leave some slack in them so that they move around and can make noise.

you can get a scat mat and lay it on your counters when you are not there http://www.safepetproducts.com/scat-mat-for-cats-and-dogs.html?gclid=CMOxw92Lya4CFcFw4AodCHg3AA

Cats can be neuter around 4-5 months of age. At the age of 6 months they start to hit puberty. Male cats have a tendency to spay and it's not fun! Even if you neuter after spraying begins it's not guaranteed that they will stop. As for the behavior, I would use a spray bottle.

Get him neutured before he starts spraying your house! He does sound like a normal male kitten. I had a male kitten that would attack my newborn daughter and steal all of our shoes and socks and hide them under the couch.
