How to animate a treeview from scratch?

How do I teach my cat to scratch his post?

  • I have a post for him to scratch on, but he consistently scratches my furniture! I spray him with water to say no. Does anyone know a method I can use to teach him just to scratch his scratching post?

  • Answer:

To keep your cat never to scratch on furniture, Sticky Paws works *every* time. It's specially developed for this problem. Do make sure you provide him an appropriate place to scratch - it's a normal, healthy exercise for cats. You can quite literally teach your kitten to use a scratching post by putting some catnip on it (or catnip spray). Then gently "hang" his claws on the post. Or use a feather and "tease" him up the scratching post. If he scratches, praise him and pet him. He will soon learn to associate the post with pleasure, and stay away from the Sticky Paws and your furniture! PLEASE don't declaw it is cruel, inhumane & unneccessary.. Has the post been there as long as the furniture? You could try putting the post infront of the furniture he scrathes.

Try putting some catnip on or in the post. Go to the pet store. There's a few sprays you can get to teach your cat where NOT to scratch. You spray it where they're scratching and rub their face in it. When they lick it...ooooh is it bitter! Worked great with our dog.

spray the scratching post with liquid cat nip this should get him more interested in the post that the furniture dont use to much catnip though if you put to much on it could make him sick catnip is a natural relaxant to cats so they love it

1. Go to the pet store, get some cat nip spray, and spray the post. 2. Put the scratching post near the furniture he scratches the most. 3. Show him what the post is for-take his paws, press his claws out, and use them to scratch the post. 4. Keep a close eye on him and anytime you catch him scratching the furniture don't fuss, just move him to the post and encourage him to scratch there. Positive reinforcement (showing him what is correct) is usually much more effective than negative reinforcement (punishment), especially with cats. Other options which can be used in addition are to get some repellant spray for the furniture and/or to get rubberized tips for his claws. The drawback to these is that sometimes the spray smells funny to people and that the tips can be hard to apply and have to be replaced often.

Our cat wouldn't use the post when we first got it, either. We sprayed it with catnip spray and then brought him over to it and took his paws and made the scratching motion with them on the post to let him know it was alright to scratch there. We tried the sprays that are supposed to keep cats away from certain areas, but they didn't work for us. We keep little waterguns filled around the house and squirt the cats with them as punishment, it works like a charm. Good luck!

I was told that putting their paws on the scratcher and kind of imitating the motion of scratching can help. Adding catnip to it so that they're attracted to it can also help. I did both of these with my cats. Ocassionally they still think about using my chairs, but overall they're good. They haven't torn anything apart. You can also get pet repellents to drive them away from using your furniture.

put catnip in the post! and put ground black pepper around the vicinity of your furniture, the cats dont like it....after a few days the cat shouldn't want to go near the furniture
