Why do cats always stare at people?

Why do cats stare at things/people for long periods of time?

  • It's kind of creepy.

  • Answer:

Cats look at things they are interested in. We may not always be able to pinpoint why they are interested, but they are. When he stares at you, and then slowly winks or blinks both eyes, that's the cat equivalent of "blowing kisses." Try slowly blinking back, and watch what he does. If his tail is swishing back and forth with long sweeps, he's considering a choice. Probably something like, "Do I go over there and ask for a rub, or do I stay here, or head to the kitchen for a bite?" On the other hand, if just the tip of his tail is twitching, he's intensely interested in something he sees and may pounce on it soon. Sometimes cats will stare at something that frustrates them. Like that spot on the wallpaper that looks just like a bug, but eludes every attempt at capture.

that's a good question. well for one thing i believe cats are just deeply intuitive. they realize the atmosphere of moods revolving around them. about the staring thing...it is creepy, my cat does that alot and when i tell him " quit staring at me" he turns around minding his own business now. cat's are awesome, and they understand you fairly well.

When my cat sits and just stares at me, she wants a treat. She can go on like that for hours. I think it is a game she plays with me. Stare at this human long enough and I'll get a treat.

hahaha, I know what you mean. Cats will stare at me for awkward amounts of time.

My kitties do this as well and so I've turned it into "The Staring Contest Game." I'll usually stare back for as long as I can until I absolutely HAVE to blink. I win most of the time though... Cats rule.

well about 80% of a cats time is spent sleeping and just staring into space so it is most likely that they don't even know they are staring half the time and sometimes cat get intrigued by us and other things they are very smart and they love to learn and the other part of the time they are just thinking about how stupid we are

They're small predators, by observing everything they know about their environment and the actions of all the living things in it. The more they watch, the more they know about routines and cause/effect behavior. Most predator species do this. Especially the ones that have to hide and pounce to get their meals.
