My kitten has separation anxiety?

Kitten separation anxiety?

  • I just adopted a kitten today and I think she has serious separation anxiety issues. She wont let me out of her sight or else she starts screaming dramatically, she has to sleep on me, and I have to literally take her EVERYWHERE with me even if I have to go somewhere in the car. She can't be left alone or else she just cries & cries. My neighbors don't necessarily like to hear her meowing all the time so I just figured it would be easier to take her with me where ever I go rather than hear their bitching all day long. My question is, is this something normal that she should be going through? She's about 6 weeks old which I'm sure is too young to be away from her mother. I've always heard they should leave mom at 8 weeks. I have no clue if its healthy for her to be going in the car with me all the time? It doesn't seem to bother her. She sleeps behind my neck when I drive. If someone could give me some pointers on what to do or even tell me if this is normal that would be great. Thanks!

  • Answer:

She is absolutely too young to have been taken from her mother. she had a mother and siblings and suddenly was taken from them. she is a baby and she is scared. You have her one day and you don't understand that? You should not have a kitten. period. give her back to her mother and get an older cat who can be left alone and is used to it and won't cry. Whoever gave her to you is irresponsible. also, at 6 weeks she should be weaned, but that's not the problem. You might also end up with behavior problems when she is older. Did you think she would understand being taken from her family? what is the matter with people?

The kitten is at least two weeks too young to be away from it's mother, it is not weaned correctly, and is going to be frightened and meowing for it's mother for quite awhile. If you have to take her in the car with you, she should be inside a soft sided carrier, which is strapped into the seat belt on the rear seat of your car. No animal should be loose in a car, especially an animal that small. She will not stay on your neck for long if you have to stop the car quickly, and she will either scratch you badly, or get seriously hurt or even killed when she comes off of your neck. I don't know how you adopted her at such a young age, but you need to be feeding her a milk replacement formula with a pet nursing bottle for a few more weeks, until she can begin eating a soft kitten food. You can contact your local vet or a reputable pet store for some pointers. The bad part about taking her everywhere with you is that you are training her to be completely dependent on you at all times, and that is not a good thing to do. All pets need to learn to stay home alone when their people have to go out go to work, things like that. Good luck, I hope everything works out well for you both.

Actually my kitten had the same issues and it got separated from her mother when it was 2 weeks old. Don't worry this is not that abnormal and some of the cats have these issues but if you keep on taking it everywhere with you then it will keep this habit when it grows up too, but in your case... i think its better to take it everywhere due to your neighbors. My kitten is 3 months old now and it has no trouble being alone. The only problem is it got hit in her leg and today it got bitten in the foreleg too... sad. GL with your kitten!
