How long are cats' memories?

Do Cats have Memories?

  • My kittens siblings have been gone for a week, would it remember them?

  • Answer:

Tests have shown that cats have even better memory functions than dogs, but are more selective in what they remember. They tend to remember things like litter training, how to play and how to fight. It seems to be unknown whether they remember their littermates or not. It does seem quite clear that leaving their littermates does not have a detrimental effect on them. Take most kittens who are taken from their littermates and mother and given a new home. The kitten will usually cry for a few days, but soon lose that 'looking for something' expression and seem to become fully immersed in their new life without their brothers and sisters. My opinion is that your kitten will remember its siblings in the same way we would remember things from the first few years of our lives. We may remember people and events, but usually not so much as that would have a detrimental effect on our lives in the future! xx Emmie

Yes, cats have memories. They remember smells, whom they like, where the food comes from, etc. Your kitten would probably remember its siblings from a week ago, if not be sight than by smell or hearing.

Since it's so young probably for only a little while. It's like that with toddlers too. When the cat is older it definately has memories. That's why some cats become so mean after being abused.

I think they do, one of my kittens siblings left today to go to a new home and she hid under my duvet for three hours but she's out now, so I guess she knows that they have to leave but that doesn't stop her missing them.

JoeyBug

they would probably be lonely and miss them for a while wondering where they are.

Karoline

yes, they can remember but they are not suppose to stay with their siblings so it's ok.

Libby

well they remember to use the litter box, and u feed them so maybe for a while.

Yep - every time my cat hears a coyote howl, he hides under the bed. He was chased by one, four years ago and hid in the garage for three days.
