Is it true that cats cause infertility?

I own a cat, and some ppl keep telling me that cats cause infertility?

  • is this true? what can cats pass to humans?? im not married yet..but i would like to have kids some day

  • Answer:

People are lying to you. Owning a cat cannot have any effect on your fertility. The only thing pregnancy-wise that I've heard, is to avoid contact with dirty litter, during your pregnancy, because of bacteria that can cause complications.

Yes, they also kill babies, cause global warming and are responsible for the death of Anna Nicole Smith. OK, sarcasm aside, it is just a myth...an urban legend. If you're really worried about it, go see your OB/GYN.

... that's the stupidest thing I've heard today. OF COURSE THE CAT CAN'T PASS INFIRTILITY!!!

Cat's don't cause infertility, but they can be infected with toxoplasmosis, which can cause birth defects in humans, if they have certain parasites. Indoor cats are very unlikely to catch this disease since they need to either kill infected prey (mice) or come in contact with infected soil. Outdoor cats are more likely to have parasites. It's not unusual for a human to catch this disease from their outdoor cat, but it's not dangerous to adults, so they think they just have a cold. Once you've recovered from toxoplasmosis you're immune to getting it again, so there are no concerns. However, since you can't tell if you've had it before since it's like having a cold, it's best when you're pregnant not to change the kitty litter since the parasites that have the toxoplasmosis may be present in the cat's poop. If you don't have anyone to help you change litter while you're pregnant, then you could wear rubber gloves while doing it. The only way this disease is dangerous to humans is if you have an active infection of it while pregnant. Don't worry! You and your kitty are perfectly safe and you can still have your own kittens too :)

I've owned cats all my life and have had three since being married and I popped out a kid, lol. So no, it's just an old (and childless ) wives' tale.

I have never heard that before. If it were true i'm sure people would use it for birth control.

Naw, they won't cause infertility. Think about it, how can an animal so fertile, cause infertility? Besides, back in the day when everyone had 12 kids, you know they had cats around to catch mice, so that makes no sense. They say that pregnant women shouldn't change the kitty litter, because there is a parasite in the feces that can cause toxoplasmosis. That is only dangerous for people who have never contracted it before, if you have and get it again, there is no risk to the fetus. You can ask your doctor for a blood test to see if you've ever had it. It causes flu-like symptoms so you may have been infected already, and didn't even know it. Cats get it from eating raw meat (typically from killing mice and small animals). As long as your cat doesn't do that (and lots of indoor cats don't), no worries. That is not the only way to get toxoplasmosis though, you can get it from handling raw meat.
