How can I teach my conure to stop biting?

How do you teach a kitten to stop biting?

  • my 4 month old kitten won't stop biting me ( i think it might be because she thinks that because i'm her "mother", that i'm also a cat so it is okay to bite) please help!!!

    There is nothing like another kitten to do that training for you! You can do it: (1) pick kitty up gently and hiss in her face (that's what mother cats do to correct their kittens); (2) say a firm "No!" and (3) put the kitten away from you. If you are very consistent in these three steps and all other members of your household do the same she will get the message and stop biting.

Kittens do bite, mine gnawed on me all the time when she was a baby. Make sure you dont play with her using your hands as toys- encourage her to attack the toy if she must- and if she does bite your hands say NO very firmly and then ignore her for 30 seconds or so. Then gently continue playing, but if she keeps biting, walk away. Your kitten will soon notice that when she bites, you stop playing, and hopefully will get the point. Spraying with water works sometimes too.

Try a squirt gun. Whenever the kitten bites, squirt her. Most kittens will not like this. It does not hurt the kitten, and they will soon come to associate biting you with getting squirted. That said, there are a few, rare kittens that will actually LIKE it. But more times than not, the ol' squirt gun works like a charm. It also works well for getting the kitten off your curtains or to stop meowing at your door at 5 in the morning.

Have you been using your hand as a toy? If so, STOP NOW Holding firmly by the scruff of the neck and hissing like mother cat works-- Hitting and or kicking will not. as you can see by some of the answers it will only drive the cat away and make it fearful , Is it an attack or just rough play? You have to be more specific if you want good answers

Whenever she starts biting, either tap her on the nose or say "NO" really firmly. You have to let your kitten know it is wrong to bite. If the behavior continues, go to a pet store or vet or someplace like that and ask what to do.

i would suggest that when the kitten bites you, shake your finger at it very firmly and maybe hiss like a cat. You need to show the cat that it isnot appropriate to bite you. however, do NOT hit your cat under any circumstances!!

when she bites you, say "no" in a firm voice and maybe lightly hit her nose. and if she doesn't bite you when she usually does, give her a treat or something. this will teach her that if she bites, she will get punished and if she doesn't she will get a treat.

It's just a kitten thing. The only thing I discovered that worked was getting a 2nd kitten. Then they started playing with each other and stopped biting/clawing me.

When she goes to bite you, stick your finger down her throat. She will eventually realize bite equals gag....she will stop.
