Nursing homes organizations?

Why do several organizations provide pets to people in nursing homes and prisons. What are the results?

  • Answer:

I agree with Norman. They also offer companionship and frequent or return visits give them something to look forward to. It brings some fun into their lives and gives them an outlet to express their emotions. people in prison have(and rightly so) a very regulated routine, where it isn't too highly regarded to be soft. I think they would appreciate the break in routine and the opportunity to express some softer and natural emotion. In both cases I have read that it alleviates loneliness, offers a non-threatening way of socialising, helps them feel needed and loved, promotes emotional bonding, gives an awareness of responsibility toward things other than yourself, increases relaxation and decreases stress. So no matter what the environment it would generally have to have a positive effect in the lives of those that are involved in programmes like this. Animals have a great way of keeping our lives balanced. Just my thoughts.

It is great for the animals, because they find warm homes. It is good for the humans too. There has been scientific research which shows that stroking a pet reduces stress. I guess animals provide unconditional love and companionship to lonely people.

An extra interesting fact... petting animals such as cats or dogs, significantly lowers blood pressure for anyone who has high blood pressure.

The pets going to the prisons is because several of them now have programs for inmates to train help dogs (guide dogs etc).. The dogs are not their for the pleasure of the inmates, and they are VERY careful who they pick to do this. It is done mainly in women prisons. Elderly in nursing homes had to give up their pets when they went in so having resident pets, or people who come in for pet therapy really help these wonderful people to connect with something familiar that they miss.

Mommadog

they do that to teach them to be responsible and learn to care about something besides their selves plus they also are having prinsoners train dogs and as far as the old people they are to give them company

bamagirl

it is what helps heal them. it brings joy to see that they are cared for and that someone loves them whether or not its a person or an animal. its what take away the pain.
