Question for vet regarding hairball blockage?
-
approx. 10 months ago i got my cats an extra cat box. [thought i was being nice]. this spurred a territorial cat war between them. this lil war they were having went on for approx 3 months. i did not know they were having a rift between them as the result of their cat war was nothing more than using the new cat box like a revolving door...ignoring the old cat box. they both were trying to claim it as their own potty. as i tell you all this i have not actually determined the diagnosis yet but think i have. everything im telling you is looking back in hind sight. apparently my cat [ill call her poopoo kitty....and ill call the other cat [good kitty], lost the battle and was soooo stressed out over the rift between them and her inability to claim the new cat box as hers chewed all her hair out on her hind legs and stomach. at the time as i said, i didnt know what was taking place between the two cats so i chalked it up to an allergy of some sort. i then started changing her food to the expensive stuff vs. fancy feast which she sooo loves. eventually i realized the cats were infact fighting over the cat box so i moved one of the cat boxes up high because only poopoo kitty is skinny enough to jump or climb. good kitty is 17 pounds. thus she had her own cat box. she started to use her cat box occasionally but it was this awful smelling half formed and half diareah poop. more and more she stopped using the box [i thought it was because it stunk so bad]. she had outburst of diareah...seemed to be uncontrolable. i took her to the vet, and she had a blood test. her alt was 383[normal is between 10 and 100] and her ast was 208 [normal between 10 and 100]. the vet chalked it up to her vomitting and said it was most likely bile in the liver due to her throwing up. he gave her antibiotics as the blood test apparently didnt raise any eyebrows at the vet. the vet said a precautionary dose. the antibiotics made her diareah worse. after three days of pancake diareah all over my house i stopped and vet gave the ok to stop the meds. in hind sight i am very dissapointed the vet didnt reccomend or even think to do an xray to look for intestinal blockage. the vet assistant that night was deaf...literally. and though i told her all this she missed alot because if she wasnt looking right at me she didnt hear what i was saying. i told her about the pulled out hair, diareah,...everything. when the vet came in i also didnt care for his service as he was very shy and seemed to have a hard time making eye contact. i felt like he wasnt listening...he had his plan which is blood test, exam...and go from there. anyways poopoo kitty continued to have diareah on the floor and vomitting. i wanted to give hert hairball medicine and thought to before but was afraid as i was spending all my time picking up diareah already. she didnt seem to have a problem pooping and i didnt want to make it worse with laxatone. eventually i read about hairballs and blockage causing diareah. i then started giving her hairball paste[laxatone]. after i started giving it to her she still was pooping on the floor but the first week she was pooping once a day[on the carpet]...but it was enough poop for three poops. was large and lots. THE DIAREAH WENT AWAY!! however it still stunk to high heaven! after a week or so the amount of poop subsided but she was pooping only once a day but it was still a large amount and still on the carpet. she has escaped three appointments with doctor doom as i am having a problem euthanizing a cat with what appeared to be a learned behavioral problem that was caused initially by the stress of fighting with good kitty, and then diareah and then me chasing her around to keep her from pooping on my carpet, holding her in the box so she finishes up her nasty poop in the box instead of my carpet. she has been traumatized by the entire ordeal now for approx. 10 months. this morning she actually pooped in her box and for the first time it wasnt massive...however she also had some remaining poop to come out[a small pile on my carpet]....when i picked it up it had a chunk of hair in it....big enough to see....if i had to guess it was about the size of a marble. i also noticed in the last week she had been having awful gas. so bad i thought the poop was actually coming out. i have not smelled it in the last two days. anyways her pooping regimine has been one large poop and untill this morning when she pooped she was pooping in the 2pm time frame everyday. today she pooped around 7am and it was much smaller than her previous 2 months worth of pooping. i am thinking that maybe her hairball [the hair she chewed off her body 10 months ago] has started to work its way through which is why she was able to poop in 12 hour vs 24 at any rate.....my question is.....if she had a severe blockage of hair and i started giving her laxatone...would these results be the process of "elimination"? and do you think she will once again to be a &
