What are some major cat surgical procedures?

Why is the cosmetic docking of a cat's tail considered by many to be so appalling?

  • Yet a lot of the same people who condemn that procedure are perfectly happy to amputate their cat's claws for the sake of the velvet love seat. Odd double standard isn't it? http://www.catfacts.org/declawing-cat-facts.htm This video is short and distressing but no surgical procedures are depicted. It shows a post operative but still recuperating cat in bandages,in what looks to be a quite high level of pain and unable to move more than a step or two. The family dog whimpers in sympathy with his poor little sibling. DO NOT click this link if you know it will upset you unduly as the video plays automatically on accessing the article.

  • Answer:

Amputating ANY part of ANY animal for cosmetic purposes is always wrong. There's absolutley no excuse for it. Cats use thier tail and whiskers for balance and thier claws for climbing and gripping thier food. Cutting off thier tail is like cutting off your feet and cutting off thier claws is exactly like cutting off a humans fingers.

How can you tell what a cat is thinking without it's tail? How can a cat maintain proper balance without it's tail? How can you crack up your stoner friends without a tail to tie a balloon to? Oh, the Humanity!!!

Declawing is mutilation. Who is docking tails? If you are talking about the Manx breed, that is a natural mutation - the tail is NEVER docked on Manx cats.

I have Manx, some are tailless "rumpies" and some are "stumpies", both can be registered. Some dock stumpies at birth, I don't, I kinda like the bobcat look. I adopted a declawed Siamese from a shelter in college that would kneed my face with those incredibly soft declawed paws. She lived to be 21. RScott

Cat's actually need their tail, to keep their balance. Those people are idiots. I don't condone declawing at all, but some residences do not allow cats to have claws...it unfortunate. I would never do either.

Weird, huh? There's actually one breed that naturally has practically no tail. :o)
