Are cats smarter than dogs?

  • Just to add to the discussion a few days ago on this, it's true there are no seeing eye cats or herding cats (very funny comment), but I would argue the reason is b/c dogs were domesticated 12,000 yrs ago while cats only became pets about 1,500 yrs back. There's been a lot more time for humans to select and breed dogs that have traits we like, such as the ability to follow stupid commands. Cats are much closer to wild animals (hence all the mouse hunting and energy during traditional hunting hours.) That is also why cats sleep so much. They're not lazy. In the wild, cats need up to 16hrs/day os sleep to have the strength to hunt, this instinct has yet to be bred out of cats. Also, cats can be trained, but few people believe this and it's not necessary since theyre pretty self-sufficient, so we rarely take the time. I've seen cats that fetch, sit, give paws, walk on leashes and even one who scuba dives!

Well lets see. Cats and dogs live in the same house. The dog gets chased by the kids, has to learn to fetch,must be a good boy, come when called and always do what the humans want. For that they get feed twice a day. Cats sleep sixteen hours a day. Come if they feel like it and only want to be petted when they want. And get feed twice a day. You do the math.

Uh, cats have been pets for a lot longer than 1500 years. The egyptions worshiped the cat. They belived the cat to be godlike and was the keeper of the underworld. Hmmm, not much different in what we think of today. Anyone know of a cat who doesn't think it's godlike?

in a way, yes. they are independent, and they CAN learn tricks and open doors, aka my kitty. its so cute. so, this way, they can be both. so there, dog luvrz!!

I think that they both are "smart" in their own way. True, dogs can be trained, but cats seem to have a mind of their own, unlike dogs. But overall, I'd say that cats are smarter, as they think for themselves and don't rely on a master.

Yes, I saw a sweet mother cat get adoped because she was totally burnt from a fire trying to rescue her kittens and did not care what happened to her saving those kittens, she did live and has had some operations but looks awful, poor kitty. That's very smart!!
