How should I connect my dvd player to my tv?

How to connect dvd player to tv so the channels will work?

  • I just bought a new dvd player w/ vhs combo but does not have an antenna input/output to connect my older tv which has the antenna input/output. Before then, my old dvd player had an antenna which I can watch regular tv channels on it but this new one only comes with rca jacks. Dvd works, vhs works, but I can't see any channels that I used to or the remote from the dvd player doesn't work on the tv. Anyone know why or what I NEED? HELP!

  • Answer:

You obviously have some hopelessly outdated equipment. Modern DVD players do not have an RF pass through (the name for the feature you are referring to in your old VHS unit) and don't need one either. Modern TV sets have a wealth of different inputs to use for hooking up various sources such as DVD players, cable boxes, game machines, etc. You do not say how you have hooked up your DVD player to make it work. If you used composite video (the yellow connector) then the antenna input to your TV is still available and you can use it. If you hooked up your DVD player to an RF modulator (what William B is referring to) and then to the antenna input you will need an RF switch ('Y' switch) to shift between the antenna and the DVD player. The reason most modern sources do not have an RF pass through is because it is not necessary in modern systems. Your RF should come in through a cable box or a satellite box and be passed on as composite video (also called baseband video) to the rest of your system and finally to the TV set. If you want to record TV on your VHS/DVD player you will need either a TV tuner which will have a composite video output, or a newer TV set which will also have a composite video output.

Go out and buy yourself an RF Converter box. This box will cost you around $25 and I believe you can get one at Wal-Mart. It will allow you to hook up RCA cables from the dvd/vcr device to the converter box and then a coaxial cable from the converter box to the tv's antenna input.
