What is a home theater?

What home theater subwoofer should I buy?

  • I have already bought a home theater system and are now looking for a home theater subwoofer to accompany my system. I dont know much about home theater subwoofer as my husband is the one who has send me out. My budget for the home theater subwoofer is around 600$ as my husband wants a home theater subwoofer that will "blow him away". So what home theater subwoofer will you recommend and why? Thanks everyone

Hey Samantha, for the information you provide, I will recommend between two home theater subwoofer as both are incredible. The first one is the Polk Audio PSW10, the quality of the subwoofer itself is really good and so is the sound quality. You get all your money worth for these speakers as they provide amazing sound and still being so cheap. The second one is the Polk Audio PSW505 and these are basically nothing less than fantastic. The Bass is so crisp and clear and really loud if you want it to be. I could basically go on forever about these two home theater sufwoofer, but I will recommend that you look at both the links below and check them out yourself and see which one you feel is right for you.

I have owned subwoofers from Polk, Klipsch, JL Audio, and Velodyne, and have to say I have been more than impressed with Velodyne. You didn't supply any information about your room size, but you can generally figure that smaller rooms (200 sq ft. or so) only need an 8-10" sub, but go with a larger subwoofer for larger rooms. They come in 12, 15, and 18 inches and have excellent built in amplifiers. $600 should be more than enough to get one- their impact 12" can be found for less than $400 with shipping. Also, there is a line of subwoofers designed by legendary Bob Carver calle dSunfire that I have heard nothing but the best in audio circles. For roughly $600-$700 or less you can get a 12" version used on EBay. You won't be disappointed by Velodyne, though.

You can get an entry level SVS just inside that range... http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-sb12nsd.cfm SVS is a little better in general than any of the brands mentioned in the other responses but ideally you would go with one of their higher lines as opposed to this entry level linked above. With a bigger budget you could go for their "Ultra" PB13 and do really well but it's about 3x your budget. You can find a lot of measurement data on various subwoofers here... http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/subwoofer-tests-archived/6015-index-subwoofer-tests-manufacturer-model.html The problem is that none of the data may make sense to you. If you study it a bit and think about it, you should be able to extract something from it. You want to see distortion curves low, you want to see the response increase linearly with linear increases in power input. You want to see the response extend as low as possible... You will observe that none of them are very good when it comes to distortion at low frequency but some are better than others. mk

Hard to advise you when you share so little information. If your system already has a subwoofer, it is very unlikely that anything else can be substituted. If you have a receiver with a subwoofer output, my personal favorite brand is Klipsch.
