Two questions regarding HDMI Cables?
-
Hello. I've got a new PS3 Slim I just received and I'm searching online for HDMI Cables. I mistakenly bought a $45 HDMI cable at Best Buy and after reading how theres no difference in cheap or expensive cables, I took it back and bought another game with the money. However I'm looking at some HDMI cables online and I've noticed theres two categories for them? Category 1 and Category 2? What is the difference? There's a nice cheap and highly recommended HDMI Cable I've got my eye on, but it says its Category 2 so I don't know if that will make a difference for my PS3 or not. Here's the link for the HDMI Cable in question, http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024008&p_id=3992 Basically I just want to know. What is the difference between Category 1 and 2 HDMI Cables, and does the cable I linked look fine for a PS3? Thanks a lot!

Answer:
From wikipedia "Category 1-certified cables, which have been tested at 74.5 MHz (1080i/720p), and Category 2-certified cables, which have been tested at 340 MHz (1600p)." Basically - it's been tested at higher resolutions guaranteeing compatibility with most equipment sold out there today. It's fine, I got monoprice HDMI cables as well. Performs as well as anything else.

Other answers
Standard (or “category 1”) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 75Mhz, which is the equivalent of a 1080i signal. High-Speed (or “category 2”) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 340Mhz, which is the highest bandwidth currently available over an HDMI cable and can successfully handle 1080p signals including those at increased color depths and/or increased refresh rates. High-Speed cables are also able to accommodate higher resolution displays, such as WQXGA cinema monitors (resolution of 2560 x 1600).

Get this one, it's the best for the price and I and all my friends have this same one. It's reliable, great picture and sound quality and super cheap. I use it for my PS3 and the picture quality is stunning. Sorry, I don't know about category 1 or 2. http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-meter-foot-cable-1080P/dp/B0002L5R78/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1251676636&sr=8-1
