Why I do not get 5.1 surround sound after connecting HDMI player in to surround system using digital coax ?

My surround system (philips MX5700D) do not have HDMI out. But it provides excellent surround sound with DVDs. Then I bought a DVD player with HDMI output (Pioneer DV490V-s). I tried my best to get surround sound but still struggling. HDMI player was connected to HDMI port on TV. The TV has optical out but my surround system only has a digital coax input hence unable to hook up TV directly to surround system. I hooked up HDMI player to the Surround system using digital coax. digital out was selected in the menu and no 5.1 surround heard. Sound seems to be 2.1. Selected HDMI sound on auto mode but still the same. Can any one tell me why? I'm not sure my surround system is decoding 5.1 when an external signal is used via digital coax. I don't want HDMI without surround sound. so please any one tell me how I can overcome this problem.

bcoz, this HDMI player is the most third class player of the millenium. u should break this 1 or make it hanged up on the "chaddi and baniyan tree" behind your house. this will help u to progress in your private affairs.

If your receiver does not accept HDMI , I think I would lose the HDMI cable and use component connection for video , and the digital coax for audio. You won't loose anything and you will get 5.1 surround sound. The only advantage HDMI has is that you are using one cable connection vs. two.
