Whats the difference between BlueRay, HD DVD and regular DVD's?

What is difference between BlueRay and regular HD DVDs?

  • Are there any special advantages for adding a BlueRay player to my home theater system?

  • Answer:

Did you mean "regular DVD's"? DVD's are a modern, high-tech way of storing video that is compatible with 1940's televisions. Both BluRay and HD-DVD are containers for HDTV signals which go up to 1080 lines. BluRay won the format war so it is the type of player you should get, not "HD-DVD". BluRay also often includes un-compressed 5.1 sound. (Dolby Digital is actually 6:1 compressed sound). All BluRay players will also up-convert standard def video (kind of magnifying the image) and squirt it out the HDMI cable to simplify wiring. So I think you do want a BluRay player. One of the better players is the Sony PS3. (I am not a fan of Sony because of the dirty tricks they have done as a company, but the PS3 has the technical horsepower to be one of the better BluRay players.)
