What's wrong with my new HDTV if the HD picture doesn't stretch all the way across the screen? ?
-
I have a new Samsung HDTV 46 inch that works fine, pictures from any channel including HiDef and regular broadcast fit the screen to its edges. I just got a 26 inch HDTV and some tv shows fill the screen and while others do not. The installer said its non-high def shows that show at 4:3, but three are many 100% HD channels that have an 4:3 aspect ration instead of 16:9. Could it be the comcast converter box from Comcast since the working TV has a different converter box?

Answer:
Comcast employees do NOT know how to set up HDTVs - this is my experience with many of their customers. With the tv ON but the box switched OFF, push the "menu" button. It should take you to a small menu system where you can configure what kind of signal it's sending the TV - and what the "fall-back" mode should be. The "fall-back" is the resolution it should use for 4:3 ratio channels. Also, make sure they plugged the box into an appropriate channel on the TV - sometimes they put it into a 480-only socket when you have a 1080 open.

More than likely your 46" is set to stretch any non 16:9 picture to fill the screen where as your 26" Tv is not. You should be able to set your 26" to stretch the image by some means but, keep in mind that this does distort the image in some way or form (not such a big deal on a 26").

If you are watching an HD channel and you get the 4:3 with the bars down each side...that is most likely because the program is not being broadcast in hd...yes it can be on an HD channel...but not actually be in HD.

Yes, it could be. Most likely, it's the non HD shows that are doing this.
