Answer:
Most current HD Receivers have an HDMI output, so yes you should be able to connect to your tv. As far as picture quality, it would be important to know what you are comparing the HD signal to. For example if coax cable or composite (yellow for video and red and white for audio) then you will see a huge difference when viewing HD content. If compared to component (red, blue and green video only) it is unlikely you will see any improvement in the picture quality. When talking about watching TV, IMO, the biggest advantage to HDMI or component is one cable can handle video and audio. If you were talking about 1080p and 7.1 audio Dolby TrueHD, etc (Bluray players) I would only hook them up with HDMI 1.3.

The answer will be easy for you to figure out, but impossible for me to know based upon the information given. Take a look at the back of your HD receiver and look for an HDMI output. If it has one, you can connect your HDMI TV, if not you aren't completely out of luck. If your HD receiver has a DVI output, you can use a converter cable with a DVI plug on one end and HDMI on the other. If your receiver doesn't have either of these connectors, you should consider getting a new receiver. Your HD receiver may only have Component connections, which is not the best quality. If you are spending the $$$ on a nice TV, get a nice receiver to go along with it. I'm a big fan of Yamaha receivers. I've owned two of them over the past 15 years and they are awesome. If you are a true novice, you might want to seek the advice of a neighbor or friend who knows how to properly connnect your equipment. If you have the money, (and who does these days), get professional help. Professional installers will normally do a much better job of setting up your equipment, plus they will program your multi-function remote so that you can just push one button and have all your equipment come to life simultaneously. Very cool. Have fun!
