Can u connect a blu-ray player to the internet by hooking it up 2 a laptop?

You sound like your trying to upgrade the firmware on it. Read the manual on the manufacturer's website on how to upgrade the firmware on your player. You do not connect the player to the Internet to do this, nor do you connect it to your computer. Sometimes it can be done via removable media or optical media.

Basically you need to hook up an ethernet cable from a router to the blu ray player. Hooking up a blu ray player to a laptop will not work. If you are trying to update firmware for the blu ray player what you need to do is go online and look up the model you have and download the firmware.
