How do I hook up my VCR if i have Dish Network?

Hooking up VCR through Dish Network receiver?

  • Hi there. I have a Dish Network receiver (for two tv's) and I want to hook up my VCR to my home setup in the living room. Here are my current connections to my television: DVD Player: connected to component cable section 1 XBox 360: connected to component cable section 2 Dish Network: connected to red white audio/S-Video section My HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 slots are empty, my RGB PC/audio slot is empoty, the yellow VIDEO port under the A/VS-Video section is empty, and the DTV/TV/Cable/Antenna RF cable slot is empty. What is the best way to hook up a VCR with what I have? my VCR has the audio/video ports and a RF cable port. If I remember correctly (I haven't used the VCR in a long time), I don't need to use the A/V ports to watch video tapes but I definitely have to use the RF port. It sounds simple I'm sure but advice from you guys would definitely help me out :). Could I just run a RF cable from the VCR to the RF port on the television or do I HAVE to run a/v cords?

  • Answer:

It is a shame to see a HDTV wasted by watching Dish over S-video. First call Dish and ask for an HD receiver, they have a special offer to upgrade you to a an HD Dish DVR for free (for a monthly fee though..). Back to the original question. For your VCR you can use either the RF or composite (yellow) port; quality will probably better by using composite, but not by much.
