How to hook up computer to Home Theater system?

How to hook up an RCA home theater system, when the only thing you have is a speaker plug (headphone plug)?

  • I bought a Coby home theater system, it was advertised to be able to connect to a computer. But when i got it and tried setting it up, i couldnt. It has RCA jacks to plug in, but my computer has only a headphone jack. So how could i hook it up to my computer?? Im tight on money so a converter is my last option. Im good with wiring, if its possible to cut one end of the jack off and wire it straight to a headphone wire please let me know. Any other ideas are appreciated and any solutions are even more appreciated.

  • Answer:

A basic pre made cable should be under $5 but you will have to look past the fancy gold plated ones that cost much more. If you have an old pair of headphones and a set of rca cables laying around you can try and make your own. Problem with the cheap cables is the wires are pretty tiny and hard to work with. The headphone wire will have 2 main wires coming off it. Each wire will have a core wire in the center and then wires around the core. The RCA will pretty much be the same so all you have to do is connect them. You hook core wire to core wire for each side of the cable and then the outer wires to outer wires.
