I'd like a recommendation for a LCD video projector?
-
I want it for a relatively large room (so the bigger the possible screen size before being washed out, the better). I'd also like to handle as high a resolution as possible. My budget limit is probably $4K, but I could be persuaded to go a bit higher

Do you want a rear projector? Then check out the 70" Sony SXRD. It is considered to have the best picture of all LCD-type projectors (magazine reviews). Sony has a front-projector version but it's outside your budget. There are DLP front projectors in that price range, but they are still 1250x720 resolution (the SXRD is a true 1920x1080). There are DLP rear projectors that look pretty good; they advertise 1920x1080 but it's not real (simulated by wobulation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wobulation). These pictures are a little softer than the SXRD, but some people like that (more "film like").

Circuit City has plenty of LCD projectors that are great value and under your price range.

Circuit City has a s-h-i-t-t-y offering of projectors...at least for home theater applications. Most of their products are only good for media presentations in board rooms and classrooms where the picture color, detail, brightness, contrast and resolution is not all that important. Also, when you buy a low-end projectors like the ones they have, the fan inside will be obnoxiously loud and distracting while viewing movies that have quiet passages to them. I have two projectors that I am currently using. One is a Yamaha DPX-1300 which uses DLP technology and has an absolutely amazing picture. The unit has all of your major inputs like component and HDMI and retails for about $12,500. I also have a Panasonic PT-AE900 which uses LCD techology and has a wonderful picture for the price. You can have the unit for around $1,500. That's a scream for such a good unit. It is HD-capable and has component and HDMI inputs as well. Whatever you do, don't forget the screen. Da-Lite has some great products and so does Stewart. People often get wrapped up in getting a projector and forget that a screen has a tremendous impact on how the image will look based on where the viewer is seated and how much ambient light is in the room. Please do not scrimp on a good screen. I recommend checking out the website www.projectorpeople.com They will help you select an appropriate projector for your application and a screen to go with it that will suit your needs. Good luck and enjoy!

Just bought a Sony 50" SXRD. Thought about a samsung with the TI DLP chip but glad i went with the LCoS system, gives a much cleaner picture. CNET.com has given these TV's pretty good ratings also. Have fun moving into the HD world!

I purchased a DELL projector 2 years ago and have not had any problems with it. The screen is bright and the picture holds up to a 8ft * 4ft size. It has 1200 Lumens but better still has a contrast ratio of 1:2000. (This is more important than the lumens) I paid $900 for it at the time and the prices have gone down. I would suggest going with the TI DLP technology to get a better picture.
