Home theater audio optical cable surround sound help?

  • I just bought one of those 5.1 "home theater in a box" deals that has the DVD player and receiver combined into one unit. Problem is, there aren't too many inputs. I'm trying to figure out how I could get the surround sound to work with both my xbox, and while watching tv. I don't know much about this stuff so I needed some help. I currently have my cable box and xbox both connected to my TV with HDMI cables. My TV has an optical audio output and the DVD/receiver combo has an optical audio input. Since the HDMI cables are carrying the surround sound signal to the TV, then can I just hook up the optical audio output on the TV to the optical audio Input on the DVD/receiver box? Would that work? Is there any other way I could do it? My DVD/Reciever only has an optical audio input and the RCA (left and right) jacks but I tried using those and the surround sound doesnt work.

    Connect optical from Xbox to system and RCA from cable box or TV to system.

Get a reciever. These range from expensive and fancy to cheap and ugly. I bought a pelican reciever that has 6 input stations for stanard video and stereo, and one output for 10 bucks at walmart, found it in the video game section.

If the TV's Optical connector you mentioned is really an output, then yes it will work. You will get DD 5.1 out of the HTS. If not, you will need to connect an optical cable from the xbox to the HTS. RCA White-Red is Analog Stereo, not Surround or Digital.
