Can I use my Tivo as an Audio Receiver?

I want to plug my HD plasma into my new home theatre i bought, but my tv doesn't have any audio outputs. TIVO?

  • My tv doesn't have any audio outputs. No optical out and only av in. I would like to set up my tv to the home theatre so when i watch HD channels, i will get surround sound. The dvd player/ receiver that came with the home theatre system connects to the tv with a hdmi cable and 5.1 surround sound works fine on dvd. So, since my tv doesn't have any audio outputs, if i get a tivo would i be able to... -use a hdmi cable to connect the tivo to the tv -use an optical cable to connect the tivo to the dvd player/receiver thing? would that route the tv sound away from the original tv speakers to the home theatre speakers? sorry about the long question. 17 year old girls and electrical stuff don't mix too well lol

  • Answer:

< I'm presuming you have an all-in-one home theater system; DVD player and receiver in a single unit, connected to several speakers > "-use an optical cable to connect the tivo to the dvd player/receiver thing?" >>> Yes, if the 'dvd/receiver thing' (receiver) has an extra optical audio input you can use. >>> If your receiver doesn't have an extra optical audio in, check and see if it does have an extra pair of RCA jacks for 'Audio in'. These may be labeled 'Aux', 'Aux in', 'TV', 'Cable'... refer to your user manual for details on connecting "external equipment" to your receiver. >>> Check the back of your TV for a pair of white and red RCA connectors. They may be labeled ' monitor out', 'Audio out', 'Line out', or 'Monitor'. Not all Plasma models have them, but check anyway - or refer to your TV manual if it's handy. Connect these to your receiver, while the Tivo is connected directly to the TV.

If you want to get audio via the TV speakers, an HDMI from the TiVO to the TV would work. If you want to utilize your home theater for sound, you can plug the TiVO into the receiver and the receiver into the TV via optical/component/HDMI or whatever is available to you. I must say though, I have a hard time believing your TV has no component connections. There are usually 2 sets on the back of a plasma and one on the front. Your standard def components are yellow, red and white. Yellow being video and red and white being audio. Your high def components will be purple, blue and green with red and white. Purple, blue and green being video and red and white being audio. Hope this helps.
