How to program a universal remote to a dvd player?

• I recently purchased a universal remote that said it was dvd compatible but then I went to program it the directions stated I had to enter a code. The remote has no numbers visible to enter a code and the dvd player is very basic, a small Magnavox. Currently I don’t have the money to buy a new dvd player and I’d like to avoid having to get another remote seeing as I can’t return the one I already have. Is there something I’m missing on how to program this remote?

  You don't specify brand/model so no-one can be precise, and different manufacturers use different approaches to programming. In general the manual for the remote should explain the technique. That said, you usually have to set up the remote for what you want to control, then set it into "learn" mode and input the code for the device you want to control using, usually, the number buttons. If there are no number buttons the manual should specify which buttons should be used. Note that many manufacturer's components can have several possible codes, so you may have to try several to find one that works (usually by using the power on or off button to see if the component (in this case the DVD player) responds).
