How to choose a good home theater setup?

  • I recently decided to setup a decent home theater setup, but I don't have any experience buying speakers and the like. I'm going to be buying a Xbox 360 as part of my setup so what ever speaker setup I buy I want my 360 to be able to handle. On the speaker set alone I was planning on spending about $200, but the websites I've used so far don't seem to have much to offer at that price. If someone could offer some advice recommend a system maybe that would be great. A little info on what I have right now. I have a 42" LCD tv with a digital box. I have a tv stand that I can use with this and everything. If you need anymore information ask for it and I can post more. Thanks in advanced to all helpful answers.

    The only thing that might be in that budget is a home theater in a box. Those home theater in a box at that price range would not have any input for you to connect your XBOX to to hear the sound. They are also not very reliable, when one item fails the whole system would have to be replaced. I would recommend you look at an Onkyo HT-S 3400, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers for under $400. This is better than the home theater in a box. You can add just about any game console and dvd or blu ray disc player to it and connect your tv audio output to it so that you can hear the sound coming out of the tv to your system. You just add a Panasonic blu ray disc player model BD-65 for under $100 and you have a good system. Demo the system at any Fry's Electronic and let your own ears be the judge. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

$200 is quite low, and its hard to recommend a decent system for that price, some people will spend that much on just one speaker alone... even more... about the cheapest system I could recommend is a Pionner VSX-520 K receiver and Fluance speakers.....

lance is right, if you want a good theater system, the receiver is going to cost 150+ itself, then you have to buy the speakers. if you are creative and can do some wood work, it is cheaper to make your own speakers. i have 4 surround 150 watt 3way speakers i built for $40 each and a center channel with 5 speakers for 60$, thats probably more than you want to spend, but any equivalent to my speakers would have been 100$ each if i bought them from a website or store. you can make really nice speakers for 20$ each using a site like partsexpress. but if you cant make your own, just buy a set off ebay. and you will also need a subwoofer. again its best to make your own, i have a 21" sub with 1200 watts, and cost me 300$, if you tried to buy anything like that would cost you 1,500$ +. but if you cant just buy one like this. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=303-462 and i also highly recomend you buy a ps3 instead of a 360, the ps3 is WAY better than the 360 for media applications, and you can upgrade the hdd in a ps3 to 500gb-1tb. i have 32 gigs of music on my ps3 atm, and 400 gb of movies.
