Coaxial and digital output?

My dvd player has a Coaxial output can it give the digital surround sound?

  • I have seen that my DVD player has a Coaxial output and a optical audio output. If the DVD can give the digital sound output then how a configure?

  • Answer:

there is always confusion over digital sound signal and analog sound signal. now i will explain what is digital output for. To connect coxial output you will need speaker receiver which has inbuilt digital decoder. if u don't have receiver supported dolby digital decoder, then there is no point of thinking it. you might be thinking that if connect my sound system with digital output, then sound clarity will suddenly improve. remember, to get better sound clarity u need to have better quality speakers set. If u don't have then how much try out other things your sound clarity will not improve. to get a quality surround sound, u need to spend lot of money on music system. surround sound will come when u will have 5-10 number of speakers. with 2-3 speakers u will not get surround sound. To get better surround sound, u will need to have floorstanding speakers or bookshelf speakers.

Coaxial (orange RCA) and optical (black, squarish plug) are two versions of SPDIF ... one codes the digital signal electrically (coax) while the other uses light pulses. Both support 5.1 digital surround. Although there are theoretical pros and cons to each technology in practice results are essentially identical Many players support one or the other, while many amps/receivers support both. If your player has both use whichever works best for you. Note that while you can use any RCA cable to connect the coax best results require a digital coax cable ... which will be about the same cost as an optical cable. To configure, connect the appropriate cable between the player and your amp/receiver and be sure to select the right input source jack for the DVD input on the amp/receiver. Yes, you just connect optical or coaxial digital cable from DVD player to receiver surround sound.

If your DVD player is 5.1 and with built-in Dolby AC3, yes it can.
