Connecting TV to DVD HiFi System?

  • I have just purchased a Sony Bravia KDL-46D3500 TV with a Sony DAV-DZ260 speaker system. To allow me to hear the TV on the DVD speaker system as stated in the manual (You can enjoy the TV sound in this system by easy operation. To use this function, connect the system and the TV with an audio cord (not supplied) and an HDMI cable (not supplied)). I have everything working just can't hear anything which is why I need the audio cord. The DVD system has only Coaxial Input and Optical Input, but the TV only has the red and white RCA output. My question, is there an adaptor to allow me to connect the two RCA's to the coaxial input on the DVD? I was looking at this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1018&C=APoint&U=MapAuto Would that work? Thanks, Jamie

  • Answer:

There is no cheap adapter to do this. The "Red and white" cables transmit left and right analog audio signals. Both the optical and coax inputs on your DVD Home Theater system are digital. Therefore they cannot be connected without doing the analog to digital conversion in between. This won't come cheap and isn't worth the investment. If your TV truly has no digital outs and the home theater system only has digital inputs you won't be able to get sound from your TV to your home theater. If you are using a cable box or external tuner you may have digital outputs on that which can be used to the home theater system. If you are using an antenna you could buy an external tuner with digital outs.

You're going to want to find some kind of RCA (analog audio) to Digital Optical/Coax converter. Maplins most likely stock something that can do this, otherwise, annoyingly, you might need to purchase another cheap amp that can do this from a place like Richer Sounds.

Answer to your question..... There is a not a good way to do it like that. Those converters don't work all that great.....from personal experience. You did not state what kind of setup you are using to watch television channels. ( I assume the dvd and sound is working fine) If you are receiving channels over the air or regular analog cable, then you probably can't do it. Unless your DVD player (which is really a receiver, just not a good one) has a vhf / uhf receiver, but, it does not. If you are receiving channels through digital cable or Satellite, then connect your box (cable or satellite) to the DVD player via HDMI or component cables. YOU WILL WANT to connect your dvd player to the TV using an HDMI cable. If not then you can't get 1080p. This will allow you to listen to your DVD's and TV through the speakers.......

The link you show won't work. You need to change a digital signal into an analog one. This item will work but I don't know where you'd get one in the UK http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-video/audio-converters-extenders/analog-to-digital-digital-to-analog/analog-to-digital-audio-converter-gefen-gtv-aaud-2-digaud/prodGEF00226.html
