HOME CINEMA SYSTEMS?

Do home cinema surround sound systems only have surround sound for the DVD? ?

  • I'm thinking about buying a home cinema surround sound system for my TV. I think the cables all lead in to the DVD player that comes with it, now does this mean I will only get surround sound when i'm playing a DVD or will I also get the surround sound when watching TV?

  • Answer:

Sometimes they have inputs for externals sources. Make sure the one you purchase has them, as digital coaxial or optical.

If you have a high def TV service, be it over the air (antenna), cable or satellite, you will have dolby digital sound on many programs. (nightly news is not encoded in dolby digital, but most all movies would be).

As long as that system has optical digital input.

Generally the crap-tastic 'systems' with a DVD player in the same skinny box as the receiver do NOT have digital inputs. We get several postings a week around here about "How do I hook my PS3/TV/Cable box to my system?" and we have to tell them they gave up this feature by buying these $300 crap systems. Get a real AV receiver with lots of spare inputs. Then a budget set of speakers but from a real speaker company (Sony, Samsung, Phillips do not count). Or if you buy a box system - make sure the parts look like they could be sold as separate parts. If it was me, I would buy: - Onkyo TX-SR505 receiver for about $380 - Energy Take system (even used ) for about $500
