Where should I mount these speakers for my 7.1 surround system?

http://gallery.me.com/kylestyle#100106 I have an Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 channel amplifier. ( http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?class=Receiver&m=TX-SR606&p=i ) I need to mount the speakers that came with it (center, left, right, surround left, surround right, surround back left and surround back right speakers, along with a box sub-woofer). You can barely see in the picture the two stands that came with the system which mount the speakers 3' off the ground. The living room is about 20' x 25' with 20' ceilings. The bottom of the the 52" TV screen rests 6' above the ground. I'm not concerned with surround sound effects because I only listen to music on this system. How and where should I mount all these speakers? At approximately what height should I mount each of them and how far apart should they be? Where should they be pointed? Should I ignore the stands and put all the speakers on wall mounts?

Answer:
The rule of thumb for speaker height is that they should be at "ear height" for a seated person (maybe 40" - 48"). The distance apart gets a bit more tricky (and controversial), but you are safe if you place them roughly the same distance apart as the listening position is from the wall. The rear speakers can be the same distance apart as the front - the sides can be placed at the same distance from the front wall as the listening position. Point them at the opposite wall or you can angle them in slightly towards the listening position. Keep in mind that none of this is super critical no matter what anyone says - especially if you just use this for music. Those positions will work ok for surround too. By the way, your TV is way too high on the wall. The TV should be roughly the same height as the speakers. I know you are limited by the fireplace, but just realize that if you watch it a lot, you may experience a bit of neck strain.

You should mount the speakers so that the tweeter is at ear level or angle at to the listener. You can connect all the speakers and just set it receiver for stereo. Hope this will help you out.

If you're not concerned with surround sound at all, just connect the front left/right speakers and the subwoofer. Don't even bother with the other speakers at all - music doesn't them.

well.... if you dont want surround sound, just put your system to stereo and leave them how they are.

Sine they're satellites, the distance between them shouldn't be too far. I would mount the center channel right under the tv centered on the fire place. Then the front L/R channels on the left and right side of the fireplace. (assuming the bricks don't get too hot when the fire is going) The subwoofer on the front corner of the two walls. (if the sub has a porthole on it's side, make sure it's facing the wall) That will help you decide which corner it should go. If it's ported in the front or back, then either side is fine. The rears should be place on some stands in the back and the rear center on a stand in the rear center. =) Or go crazy and hang em on the walls. You wont get much sound out of the rears anyway.
