Whats the pros and cons of running fiber optic cable to your tv over running it to your sound system?

    When connecting a home theater system, you should avoid using the TV as the central hub. What i mean by this, is that you should avoid having all the audio and video connections go to the TV and sending the digital audio out to a surround sound system. The reasoning for this is due to the fact that not all TV manufactures, and not all TV models will pass through a 5.1 audio signal. If your TV is one of the models that does not transfer a 5.1 surround signal then, it will convert the surround sound signal you feed into it, to a stereo (L & R) signal before sending it to your surround sound receiver. The ideal way to connect a home theater system is to connect all the components to the surround sound receiver and send an HDMI out from the receiver to the TV. This ensures that the highest quality audio is always going to the surround sound system and that you only have to have 1 HDMI cable go to the TV. Also if you are looking to take advantage of the HD audio (Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio) you can only do so when your blu-ray player is connected to the surround sound receiver via HDMI, as no other connection can handle the amount of information.

Alas you cannot hook it to your tv as the jack on the tv is only an output. Also Fiber optic is for carrying a digital signal, so even if you could why would you want to go to the TV with it. The TV can't decode the Digital 5.1 sound anyway you would not get surround sound from a TV anyway, not enough speakers.

Ok you don't say which tv you have but all of the brands that I am familiar with do not have optical digital audio inputs, only outputs. So you would not be able to run digital audio from your PS3 to your tv in that fashion. However, I have been known to be wrong before so if you list your make and model number someone may be able to do further research.

well fiber optic is the high quality sound. If you run it to the sound system you can play music without having to turn on the tv. and it sound great for games also. and if u run it to the tv then you would be using the tv speakers which in most cases the sound is not the best. now you can run the fiber optic to your tv and then tv to sound system but it wont be the same. And unfortunately there are no fiber optic splitters to Carrie it to both units. so choose which ever you want the best sound from.

If you are using your PS3 you should use the HDMI cable going to the tv, then an optical cable from the tv to your sound system. You should use a continues cable from one source to the other. Using a cable no longer than 35 feet at most. Using longer cable can some times create a video or audio lag. Hope this will help you out.
