Is it possible to convert stereo to surround sound instantly?

Will this be stereo surround sound or true surround sound?

  • I plan on buying a home theater tomorrow, and I'm just wondering if this will be stereo or true surround. I have an Xbox 360, PS3, and a HD Receiver all connected by HDMI on my TV. (Sony KDL- 46V4100.) If I plug the optical output from the TV, into the home theatre, will it be like plugging in my Xbox 360 (for example) into the optical input into the home theatre directly? Will it be stereo or true surround?

    The optical output from the TV is only for broadcasts received and tuned by the TV through an antenna or analog cable service (and not a digital cable box). You have to connect the optical output from your game console to the receiver's optical input to get 5.1 surround. If you use a pair of stereo RCA plugs (red and white plugs), then you will get 2.0 stereo instead of surround.

your tv should be dolby digital compatible so you should get true surround our of it since fiber optic cable can pass multi channel sound

I disagree with Matt. I think you get the digital audio output (coaxial or optical) from whatever input you have selected going to the TV, as long as it's a digital audio input. So, if you're running an HDMI cable from a cable box into input #1 and have that selected, the digital audio output will the cable output. If you're then running an HDMI cable from your DVD player into input #2, when you select that input, you'll get the DVD audio out of the TV's digital audio output. If it only outputs digital audio from the RF input, that wouldn't make sense. Just like the analog audio outputs (red and white RCA jacks) put out the audio from whatever input is selected, the digital should too, as long as there's a digital audio source at the input.

It will be stereo sound if you plug optical from TV to Home Theater. You have to connect optical cable directly from devices ( Xbox, PS3 and HD receiver ) to Home Theater for true 5.1 surround sound.
