I need help hooking my PC up to my high def tv.

Need help hooking up my TV to everything?

  • Ok I have a Sharp TV with 4 HDMI ports. Then I have a Direct TV box with a HDMI port. I also have Phillips home theater system that has a HDMI port. My goal is to be able to have everything play through the home theater system when I want to, not necesarily all the time. The way I was think of doing it is, to buy a HDMI splitter and connect it to the home theater system, then connect the TV and Cable box into the splitter. Will this allow me to play my cable through the theater system when its on, but also be able to watch cable through my TV when the theater system is off. Also one more thing Im looking to get a PS3 at some point which also has a HDMI port. If I were to get a 3 port HDMI switch and connect that to the home theater system, then connect everything to that switch will things work like I want them to. Ok I dont know if I was clear or not, but basically I want to be able to play my cable and future PS3 through the home theater system, but also be able to play them through my TV when I want. I dont know if the way I described is the best way, or will even work. If you can help me at all in this situation that would be great. Thanks.

  • Answer:

To get surround sound, you must connect from the surround sound producing device directly to the home theater system. The TV will not pass the surround sound signal from it's input through to the TV's digital audio out. The signal at the TV's digital audio output will be degraded to two-channel stereo after passing through the TV.

Hook everything up to the TV via HDMI. HDMI will carry the HD video and the surround sound signal. Now on the back of your Sharp there is a Digital Optical OUT. This is a fiber optic cable that carries the surround sound information to a receiver. Connect the Digital Optical OUT to the Digital Optial Input on your Home theater system. Viola! Anything on the TV will also go to the surround sound when you choose to turn it on. This is basically the same answer Keven gave but he suggested using the RCA red and white (left and right) connections this will NOT give you surround sound, only stereo. I work for Digital EDGE in Maryland www.GetDtvReady.com as a AV installer and this is the easiest and best way to get surround sound from all your components to a receiver. Good Luck. PS you should be able to find a Digital Optical cable online for about $10.

The best way to do this is to have all your components (Direct tv, dvd player, ps3, etc.) hooked directly into your tv using both audio and video connections, whether HDMI or component. From there, use the audio out port (red and white rca jacks) on your tv to connect it to one of the audio in jacks on your stereo receiver. That way, anything that shows up on the tv will play through your stereo, even the cable, without even having to change the mode on the receiver. With audio out jacks, sound will still be coming out of the tv speakers. So your have the option to turn off the stereo and still hear it through the tv, or you can keep the stereo on, and turn down the tv speakers. You do not need to get the HDMI splitter for your stereo receiver! That is why your tv has so many, so you don't have to get anything like that for your stereo Then, if there is anything additional that you would like to play music through the stereo, such as an mp3 player or computer, you just use the other audio in jacks on the back of your receiver. NOTE: this will still give you all your surround sound capabilities, assuming you have your stereo set on the correct mode. (prologic, prologic II, etc.)
